[Bug 212722] New: gimp fails to open links, if mozilla is not present.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=212722 Summary: gimp fails to open links, if mozilla is not present. Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Alpha 4 Platform: Other OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: balazs.melikant@univie.ac.at QAContact: qa@suse.de CC: balazs.melikant@univie.ac.at I attempted to open links stored in "Help" -> "The GIMP online", but without mozilla installed just could get error-messages, nothing else. Would be please possible to configure Gimp to seek for the (gnome) default browser and open links with that?! If something is not installed, as this time e.g. mozilla, it simply can't be THE default. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=212722 andreas.hanke@gmx-topmail.de changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CC| |andreas.hanke@gmx-topmail.de ------- Comment #2 from andreas.hanke@gmx-topmail.de 2006-10-16 14:35 MST ------- The webbrowser can be configured via: File -> Preferences -> Help System -> Web Browser So I guess you rather request a different default, because the functionality to select a different browser is already there. Two ideas (without knowing whether changing the default is actually a good idea): - firefox is available by default on more installations than mozilla; - the GNOME default browser can be reached through /opt/gnome/bin/gnome-open; - package desktop-data-SuSE contains the /usr/bin/desktop-launch script which supports both GNOME and KDE, so you would get the KDE default browser in a KDE session and the GNOME default browser in a GNOME session. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=212722 ------- Comment #3 from andreas.hanke@gmx-topmail.de 2006-10-16 19:27 MST ------- Parts of comment 2 are false. mozilla is not shipped at all any more, so there is never a mozilla binary (not even seamonkey provides it as a compatibility symlink). Therefore mozilla does not make any sense as default, it should be changed to one of firefox, seamonkey, gnome-open, desktop-launch or call-browser. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=212722 ------- Comment #4 from balazs.melikant@univie.ac.at 2006-10-17 01:30 MST ------- Thanks for your comments! SUSE/Novell claiming to have a very user-friend distro and my private opinion is, that they should not let people alone with clickety-clickety to configure the image-editor by themselves in order to access e.g. its homepage or online-help! I mean with or without mozilla existing. Surely a default-browser have to run this time, where firefox is a very good candidate. Ps. And while keeping the present situation, what if later on the user would use 10 other programs, should she/he configure them one-by-one to get this feature (=here "internet access") win* users have by default with IE installed?! Maybe the above suggestion is just a small improvement, but could help make openSUSE more user-friend and generally help to spread Linux... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=212722 ------- Comment #5 from andreas.hanke@gmx-topmail.de 2006-10-17 02:27 MST ------- Just as a hint for the maintainer: gimp-unstable already defaults to firefox instead of mozilla. So, changing the default from mozilla to firefox is probably safe. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I have changed the default browser to be firefox and submitted the package.
On my beta-1 install this bug is still present and having the very same error, just as it was reported on alpha-4. If the updated package didn't get in, please ignore this notice, but if the fixed package behaviors similarly to the old one, please consider reopening this bug. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

The fix was checked in at Oct 26, 18:57, a few hours after the Beta1 release, and will be in Beta2. In general, you can assume that if an issue is marked as fixed, it is really fixed. Alpha/Beta/RC releases are already outdated in the moment when they are released; use Factory or read the opensuse-commit mailing list if you need to verify all fixes instantly. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
