[Bug 638721] New: Are unique comments recommended in "menu.lst"?
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=638721 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=638721#c0 Summary: Are unique comments recommended in "menu.lst"? Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Minor Priority: P5 - None Component: Bootloader AssignedTo: jsrain@novell.com ReportedBy: Markus.Elfring@web.de QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=388971) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=388971) /boot/grub/menu.lst The file "/boot/grub/menu.lst" was also updated on my system once again after I installed recent kernels. I wonder that a comment like "YaST2 identifier: Original name: linux" is repeated multiple times. I assume that such "identifiers" should be unique, shouldn't they? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Created an attachment (id=388971) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=388971) [details] /boot/grub/menu.lst

Hi, it is not unique. It is there for more precise specification of section. Without it we cannot determine between failsafe and normal linux section or windows and different linux section (windows need special handling). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Can the identifier comments be deleted if they are not kept unique by the configuration update?
You can do what you want, but expect problems. It is used to add additional information about section, so e.g. section which is marked as failsafe cannot be default section. It is also used during edit to identify which chainload leads to windows (so need remapping), linux or other systems. So it is more likely additional information which need not to be unique, but its present help to do more precise decision during edit and kernel update. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Did section titles become sufficient for proper configuration processing? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Do any tools depend still on the "identifier comments"?
yes, perl-Bootloader which use it during adding or removing kernel sections into bootloader menu (and it is also used by yast2-bootloader).
Did section titles become sufficient for proper configuration processing? Tittle is not sufficient as any user can change it to fit its preference like localized tittle, so there is another identifier, which should not be changed.

Are the mentioned symbols really "identifiers" if they are not unique?
It is identifier of type, not identifier of section. So each failsafe ( e.g. for desktop and default kernel) has identifier that it is failsafe, so I know that it is failsafe type of entry. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
