[Bug 628138] New: Non-dialup interfaces do not appear in smpppd front-ends
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=628138 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=628138#c0 Summary: Non-dialup interfaces do not appear in smpppd front-ends Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: xgpub@tellas.gr QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.2.8) Gecko/20100723 SUSE/3.6.8-1.1 Firefox/3.6.8 This looks very much like Bug 547978. # grep USERCONTROL /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-* /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-dsl0:USERCONTROL='yes' /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth0:USERCONTROL='no' /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth1:USERCONTROL='yes' /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth2:USERCONTROL='no' /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-lo:USERCONTROL=no /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-tun0:USERCONTROL='yes' # cinternet -I --verbose trying to connect local smpppd 01 a dsl0 Everything worked great in 11.2. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. install smpppd 2. switch to "Traditional Method with ifup" and configure your network interface ethX or tunX with enabled user control 3. try to contrl them via cinternet or k/qinternet (which don't show any controllable non-dialup interfaces) Actual Results: There is no way to control non-dialup interfaces via smpppd front-ends like cinternet/qinternet/kinternet. Expected Results: Non-dialup user controllable interfaces should appear in smpppd front-ends. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Removing wireless support however also removed support for any non-dialup devices. Since supporting non-dialup devices was a hack anyways I'm not sure I want to have it back. If there are more people who need the non-dialup support I'd be willing to reconsider though. In the meantime you may try using the 11.2 smpppd package or rebuild the package after adding --enable-wireless as option to configure. I'll keep the bug open for a while to collect potential votes. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=628138 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=628138#c2 --- Comment #2 from Christos Gourdoupis <xgpub@tellas.gr> 2010-08-05 21:29:39 UTC --- I hate seeing good functionality in linux being dropped, and it happens a lot lately. I don't understand why it is a hack, but I'll take your word for it. All I need is a mere ifup/ifdown capability. What's the point of configuring interfaces as user controllable in Yast, if you don't have an easy way of using the feature? ssh and ifup <interface> via the console is not for every day. In the meanwhile I am trying to build the package with --enable-wireless in the OBS and it fails: smpppd-smpppd.o: In function `do_restate()': smpppd.cc:461: undefined reference to `Outsider::read_state()' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Removing support for all non-dialup interfaces was an unintentional side effect of removing he wireless support. Noone complalined about that during beta phase. Anyways, try smpppd from the network project, I've re-enabled support for non-dialup devices there again. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=628138 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=628138#c4 Terence Silk <terence.silk@tesco.net> changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CC| |terence.silk@tesco.net --- Comment #4 from Terence Silk <terence.silk@tesco.net> 2010-08-06 10:57:26 UTC --- Ludwig, No offence meant (I value your work), but for the sake of the "frustrated few" (I include myself in that category) how do you explain the following parallel Novell/openSUSE decisions? 1) Your decision to drop support for non-dialup devices in smpppd. 2) The inclusion of the option in open SUSE 11.3 (final version) Yast2/Network Settings/Overview tab/Edit/General tab, "Enable Device Control for Non-root User Via Qinternet" (it must have been discussed/specified during project meetings because Kintenet was specified in 11.2 wheras Qinternet was specified in 11.3). As a result of this Novell/openSUSE agenda divergance, it is inevitable that a lot of cumulative user time will be wasted on this problem (see hyperlink http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-help-here/network-internet/443568-qin...) until openSUSE 11.3 final version is superseded or you see fit to restore non-dialup devices to smpppd in the form of a patch. Whilst I have a degree of sympathy with your argument, I suggest that it would be more reasonable to drop non-dialup device support from smpppd in the NEXT version of openSUSE and remove the Yast2/Network Settings/Overview tab/Edit/General tab, "Enable Device Control for Non-root User Via Qinternet" option at the same time. Obviously most people caught out so far will probably have migrated to Network Manager already. Speaking for myself, I miss the handy network traffic indicator on the bottom panel. Respectfully yours, Terry. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It's a bug. Shit happens. I didn't notice the implication on non-wireless, non-dialup devices so I obviously also didn't ask the yast guy to remove the option. The string changed happened for dial-up devices and is most likely just reused for all kinds of devices. As Terry I used kinternet as a network traffic indicator and an easy way to completely enable/disable internet access. Thank you for re-enabling the support for non-dialup devices in the network project you mentioned in Comment 3. Can you please tell me where to find this "smpppd from the network project"? I would like to use it since i prefer a controllable internet access and for me the "open plug" of kinternet always indicates a more or less "perfect firewall". Moreover kinternet is the known tool for our kids to handle internet access and it was hard work to get them to actively use it. Thank you in advance. yes.

s/broken/disabled/. You can still ifup/ifdown them just like wired devices.
