Specifically, the boot messages appeared to suggest that no scsi or ide, etc... drivers were loaded. USB loaded fine though. :-| I'm in the process of repairing the boot process. Somehow, the kernel-desktop and kernel-pae-base packages got installed (but not kernel-desktop-base or kernel-pae). I removed kernel-desktop and installed kernal-pae and everything seems fine. But on the other hand, I'm not sure if 11.1->11.3 is supported. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=630513 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=630513#c3 Jon Nelson <jnelson-suse@jamponi.net> changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Severity|Normal |Major --- Comment #3 from Jon Nelson <jnelson-suse@jamponi.net> 2010-08-24 17:30:08 UTC --- I happened to note the following today: The following package updates will NOT be installed: kernel-default-devel 2.6.36-rc2.1.1 kernel-desktop 2.6.36-rc2.1.1 kernel-desktop-devel 2.6.36-rc2.1.1 kernel-devel 2.6.36-rc2.1.1 kernel-source 2.6.36-rc2.1.1 The following packages are going to be upgraded: kernel-desktop-base 2.6.35.1-3.1 -> 2.6.36-rc2.1.1 kernel-firmware 20100617-24.1 -> 20100617-24.2 This is obviously a problem, because without kernel-desktop, kernel-desktop-base can't boot most machines. Why does kernel-desktop-base even exist? In any case, kernel-desktop-base should have a hard dependency on kernel-desktop. I'm glad I caught this before I rendered by machine unbootable, *again*. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Yes - and I agree that it's probably an unsupported (and unsupportable) upgrade path. However, the fundamental problem (a dependency issue) is not related to that fact. I've actually hit this issue outside of upgrading. I think something is wrong with the kernel dependencies. One should not be able to install kernel-foo-base without also installing kernel-foo - and right now, that is possible. It's happened to me at least twice in totally different scenarios. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It's supposed to be a minimal kernel package used on some virtualized environments. This issue has been fixed differently in 12.1 by incorporating the contents of kernel-foo-base into kernel-foo. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
