[Bug 323541] New: Thinkpad X60 tablet touchscreen not activated

I tried to activate separately the tablet feature in SaX2, using WACOM / ISDV4 Tablet PC (Serial), using COM1 and with the option "ForceDevice >>>> ISDV4", but the pen is not recognized. I tried to activate separately the tablet feature in SaX2, using WACOM / ISDV4 Tablet PC (Serial), using COM1 and with the option "ForceDevice >>>> ISDV4", but the pen is not recognized.
This device isn't working with COM, but with ttyS0!
I also tried all options under Touchscreen (though no Wacom is available) and none of them worked either.
It is no Touchscreen, it's a wacom Tablet. Please try the x11-input-wacom, x11-input-wacom-tools and sax2* RPMS from here: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/dkukawka/openSUSE_10.3/ Use the config for the X61 (Tablets->TABLET PCs->Lenovo X61 Tablet PC). The multitouch feature is disabled by default, because it doesn't work atm correctly, we wait for a fix from upstream. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Danny, I installed your SaX and wacom packages, then I setup the Tablet, first without pen, then adding the pen, (restarting X every time), but in no case I got the tablet to recognize the pen. I am attaching Xorg.0.log, but the only short hint about a problem that it contains is: Wacom unable to read ISDV4 control data after 3 tries. I am also attaching my xorg.conf. The one SaX2 produced after your update had an empty section for Modes[0] and also did not activate AIGLX, which I need for Compiz, so I just copied all Mouse[3] related entries from that to my working xorg.conf (hence the old date on the header). Results (lack of results) for tablet were the same with both xorg.conf files. Thanks for looking into this, Danny. I know the bug title says "Touchscreen not working", but it will be a great help if I can get the pen tablet working, while we wait for the touchscreen to be fixed upstream. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I did copy the new mouse sections to my old xorg.conf, and the tablet functions are working. The pen button acts as middle-click, as expected. Now, since I tried first the default setting and then activating only the Pen and I found that it does not work, I would strongly suggest that activation of Pen+Eraser be done by default in SaX2 for this machine, because it is really not obvious that it will work only after that. My thinking, for instance, was that the more things I turn on, the larger the chances of things not working well, so I tried to start with the basic setting. But if the default activates Pen+Eraser, then I would have left it alone for the test. I attach the requested files here for your reference. From the output of setserial I noticed that the undefined port moved from S0 to S1. I tested to see which port is receiving input with: wacdump -f tpc /dev/ttyS0 and wacdump -f tpc /dev/ttyS1 and I saw that the tablet moved to ttyS1! So I changed the port in SaX2 and it is working again now.

The boot process failed every time when I activated the tablet even when the pen and eraser were not activated. (Sax2 is very unreliable and I will report it as a separate bug, but I managed to save a version with everything activated and deleted the parts manually for testing) Through setserial I noticed that now the tablet device is associated with ttyS4. I edited xorg.conf accordingly and I can happily report that now even the touchscreen in my X60t Multitouch works well when the touch feature is activated. But unlike in 10.3, where a different ttyS* association only prevented the tablet feature from working, with 11.1b1 the whole boot process fails if I use ttyS0 in xorg.conf. The questions is why is the serial port on this machine different from other machines where it's ttyS0 ? Currently it looks as if the port get assigned randomly and not reliable. What's going on in the kernel? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

As I said, every time the boot process does not crash, I had it associated with ttyS4. Here are the outputs of setserial -g /dev/ttyS* for 10.3 (associated with ttyS1) and 11.1 (with Touch enabled) compared. 10.3: /dev/ttyS0, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x03f8, IRQ: 4 /dev/ttyS1, UART: undefined, Port: 0x0200, IRQ: 5 /dev/ttyS2, UART: unknown, Port: 0x03e8, IRQ: 4 /dev/ttyS3, UART: unknown, Port: 0x02e8, IRQ: 3 /dev/ttyS4: No such device or address /dev/ttyS5: No such device or address /dev/ttyS6: No such device or address /dev/ttyS7: No such device or address 11.1: /dev/ttyS0, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x03f8, IRQ: 4 /dev/ttyS1, UART: unknown, Port: 0x02f8, IRQ: 3 /dev/ttyS2, UART: unknown, Port: 0x03e8, IRQ: 4 /dev/ttyS3, UART: unknown, Port: 0x02e8, IRQ: 3 /dev/ttyS4, UART: undefined, Port: 0x0200, IRQ: 5 /dev/ttyS5, UART: unknown, Port: 0x0000, IRQ: 0 /dev/ttyS6, UART: unknown, Port: 0x0000, IRQ: 0 /dev/ttyS7, UART: unknown, Port: 0x0000, IRQ: 0 Assuming this new behaviour stays like this, is it possible for SaX2 to use the output of setserial and write an xorg.conf with the correct port? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

To identify a tablet device it needs to read/write into the serial device which is probably not a good idea (go through each ttySx and read write to it). I could imagine things are exposed via ACPI and one could identify a tablet serial device from the name or even the HID of it's ACPI device. That would make it possible to identify it as a tablet device without the need of reading/writing to it. Bjorn AFAIK fixed up some acpipnp parts for tablet devices, he might be able to give us a quick pointer how serial tablet device identifcation should work. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=323541 User pavel@novell.com added comment https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=323541#c69 Pavel Machek <pavel@novell.com> changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|REOPENED |RESOLVED Resolution| |FIXED --- Comment #69 from Pavel Machek <pavel@novell.com> 2008-10-03 01:33:22 MDT --- #66: in 11.1, kernel is assigning ttyS4 all the time. Given that serial port numbers are basically random (they will change with enabling/disabling of IR port in BIOS, for example), that's correct behaviour. (It was buggy in other kernels). So this one is fixed for 11.1. Now, maybe wiring digitizer to serial port was a very stupid idea, and yes it makes life hard for SaX. But I still see no kernel problem here. Given number of comments and resulting confusion, please open a new bug for SaX. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
