[Bug 799348] New: Slow USB-speed when copy large files to an usb-drive
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=799348 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=799348#c0 Summary: Slow USB-speed when copy large files to an usb-drive Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Factory Version: 12.3 Beta 1 Platform: All OS/Version: openSUSE 12.2 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE4 Workspace AssignedTo: kde-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: jackbauer900@gmail.com QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:18.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/18.0 the issue is in openSuSE 12.2 too, the same as in openSuSE 12.3Beta1. the problem: when copy large files (>1Gb or so) to my usb-drive the transfer speed is round about 600kb/s for an USB2-drive only in writing direction. reading is just fine (10-11MB/s). tested whith various usb-drives, same issue. into the KDE4 the transfer-speed is rising up to >40MB/s and fells down to 600kb/s after a while. an old bug-report shows the same problem in openSUSE 12.2 with KDE3, but the workaround is not valid for KDE4. look here: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=784987 exactly the same problem here in openSUSE 12.2 to 12.3Beta1 the same usb-drive with other system like linuxmint has 8-9Mb/s write speed on my mashine. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. changed the usb-drive, doesnt solve the problem 2. upgraded the kernel to 3.8RC from opensuse build-serve, doesnt solve the problem 3. tested with win7 and linuxmint13 problem solved Actual Results: - i mounted the usb-drive by hand over mount /dev/sdc1 .... , same problem - played around with the mount options (sync, flush ....), no succsess Expected Results: - normal a write speed from 5-6Mb/s out of the box tested on an ohter computer with different hardware like mine, same issue -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Does this deliver the expected speed ? Or is it a general issue that writing to USB disks overall is slow ? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Which filesystem on the USB stick do you use ? In the KDE bug it is mentioned that the issue appears with ntfs formatted drives -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=799348 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=799348#c4 --- Comment #4 from Jack Bauer <jackbauer900@gmail.com> 2013-01-18 19:31:46 UTC --- sorry step more informations now. nervus fingers :-) - the transfer speed was rising up to 80MB/s - mc copied the file in seconds - can't umount the usb-drive it was still busy, i guess the data is still writing with less than 1MB/s to the drive. the problem figured here https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=273200 is exactly my problem on each filesystem. if you need more info let me know.... btw: when i mount my external hdd the writing speed is a bit better - 10-11MB/s. on openSUSE 12.1 i had 23MB/s with the same hdd on the same machine... i hope it helps -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=799348 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=799348#c5 --- Comment #5 from Jack Bauer <jackbauer900@gmail.com> 2013-01-19 19:09:36 UTC --- i did an update on my opensuse 12.2 last night. there were 2 updates for udisk2 und udev. after reboot - the following. my external hdd with ntfs has now 23,2MB/s write-speed (copied 15GB file). my 16GB usb-drive (kingston - traveller) has now 11,5MB/s writing speed. my 8GB us-drive (kingston) has now 2,8MB/s , i think this one is a really bad usb-drive. on all my tests i am on kernel 3.7.1 and kde 4.9.5 from build-service. for the harddisk i had a very short umount-time trough the kde4-widget. the kingston 16GB took more time for umount, and the 8GB a very long time. in all cases the progress bar in kde4 says 100% but i cant umount the drives safely. ... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Would you mind updating the upstream bug report. I'll close this bug as upstream, but feel free to reopen if an upstream fix is available.
