[Bug 488939] New: xorg-* & dependencies update cripples the system

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=488939 Summary: xorg-* & dependencies update cripples the system Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: bnc-team-xorg-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: bluedzins@wp.pl QAContact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: --- xorg-* & dependencies update cripples the system KDE3.5.10. Today I updated all xorg-* packages (all), which caused also update/install of few (~5-6) dependent packages. Update was done manually using Yast/SM. I cannot tell which package can cause this but after this update I see the following in every ~second reboot: * kmix does not autostart * alsamixer executed by hand also does not run, both stating there is no sound system * kpowersave starts, but is disabled (and all features of it, like suspend) * knetworkmanager reports that networkmanager is not running, so I have to restart it by hand For KNM I cannot tell (because I don't use wifi connection all the time) but those others are strictly related in effect, I mean -- either I see all them run, or none of them. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Should I open for this another report or keep it here (because probably the cause is the same)? I don't which repos I updated because of SM -- it shows only obscure aliases like opensuse_4, opensuse_11, etc. instead of repos names. So it always a blind update for me. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

This is an amazing repo list.

This is highly experimental stuff. Just a testbed for X.Org development we also use for factory. We cannot support such a scenario. X -- shouldn't be marked as UNSTABLE as other suites? It is possible for Gnome, and other software, why X experimental repo follow the pattern of stable repos? Anyway, I downgraded the xorg-* then, it seems fine, but I don't get the idea of experiments where feedback is not welcome -- it is quite contrary to any BTS I know (KDE for example, you can fill reports against SVN even). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Renaming it now would cause problems for people already using it. It's not that we're not interested in feedback, but the issues you're seing are very likely related to all the other repos you added as well. I'm not aware of any official pattern for marking repos stable/unstable. Renaming it now would cause problems for people already using it.
It can be introduced with the next version of OS. I reported it, so hopefully there will be some uniform naming.
It's not that we're not interested in feedback, but the issues you're seing are very likely related to all the other repos you added as well. It's simply not possible to reproduce and/or investigate this issue.
So what set of repos is valid for reporting? I thought download.opensuse.org is pretty legal for that (except for home:). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

However this was dropped. Anyway, you already pointed out how to make a reliable peek in what was installed -- so those are those packages, which xorg-* triggered to install/update: libpciaccess0-7.4-25.1 libpciaccess0-devel-7.4-25.1 libpixman-1-0-0.14.0-3.1 libpixman-1-0-32bit-0.14.0-3.1 libpixman-1-0-devel-0.14.0-3.1 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

BTW, pixman is now maintained by GNOME maintainers. In X11:XOrg it's just a link to openSUSE:Factory. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
