https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=403135 User mfabian@novell.com added comment https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=403135#c1 --- Comment #1 from Mike Fabian <mfabian@novell.com> 2008-06-24 03:54:41 MDT --- This problem occurs not only with KDE4 but also with KDE3. Actually I can even reproduce it with KDE3 on openSUSE 10.2, i.e. it seems to be a long standing but which affects both KDE versions. I have selected the "blank" screen saver. Therefore, the screen should get black when I click on the menu entry "Lock Screen" in KDE. Most of the time, this works. But sometimes, it doesn’t: The screen doesn’t get dark and I wonder what is wrong. Is my system load high and the screen saver just slow to start? Then I notice, that gkrellm (a system monitor) has stopped updating and realize that the screen is locked after all, only not blanked. I hit a key or move the mouse and see the password dialog ot unlock the screen. Then I click "Lock Screen" again and on the second try it usually works. Unfortunately this is not reproducible at will, there is a certain randomness. Sometimes the screen is properly blanked and sometimes (much rarer) it is not. By the way, I don’t think it matters which screensaver is used, I think I have seen this effect with other screensavers, i.e. not the "blank" one as well. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Unfortunately I can't tell if the phenomenon is related to a specific screensaver, however, the effect described by Mike appeared about weekly or biweekly. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It seemed it is in connection with a heavy load of the machine which was just copying several gigs to a USB-attached harddrive. Later after the copy had been finished the bug did not appear again. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Though "Blank screen" screensaver works ok, i experienced it with "Swarm" from "Flying things" category. Tested "Lines", "Lorenz Attractor" and "Virtual machine" - they all work ok. With "swarm" some strange thing occurs: I can preview screensaver by pressing "Test" button, and it works ok. But when scrrensaver must be started automatically, in timeout, display just freezes. If i move mouse after freezing, display defreezes back. I have TOSHIBA L300-110 notebook with intel-965 chipset and intel GMA X3100 onboard videocard. I don't actually know, if it is separate problem from reported here, but it seems to be the same. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
