I have used FIXMBR in the WinXP rescue mode, rebooted the installation disc and just started the basic installation, and it works... So, I can't get the y2logs. But there are some people still having this problem (I have seen this on various forums on the Internet), so perhaps any of them could create a y2logs file if it goes wrong. Therefore YaST2 assumes that initialisation of partition table was succesfull and the following creation of a partition fails. As already said I have no idea why this is not working on your system. To my knowledge there are no reports for 10.2 with such a behaviour. Is there something special set for your BIOS on hda (partition table protection)? Please try the following: - Boot the rescue system of SL 10.2 - log in as root - execute the command "parted -s /dev/hda unit cyl print" - if parted tells about "unrecognised disk label", execute the command "parted -s /dev/hda mklabel msdos" - execute the command "parted -s /dev/hda unit cyl print" again and check if the message about "unrecognised disk label" is gone. - please provide the content of /var/log/boot.msg and the output of the command "dmesg" -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=239770 ------- Comment #10 from fehr@novell.com 2007-02-21 04:03 MST ------- Meanwhile your disk contains a valid partition table even in the first call to "parted ... print" Did you create this partition table manually? this problem. Could you attach the y2log containing the new failure during installation? So far I could only assume that there is some hardware problem (probably controller or disk drive). From the file rescue.log it looks as if parted gave you a prompt when you executed the commands "parted -s /dev/hda unit cyl print" or "parted -s /dev/hda mklabel msdos". Did you get a prompt from parted? This should not happen.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=239770 ------- Comment #12 from me@shadsterling.com 2007-02-21 10:34 MST ------- We may be going off topic with some of this. I did not create a partition table manually. Before posting here I tried to write a blank partition table with cfdisk (booted to rescue), but that didn't resolve the problem. I did get a prompt from parted, each time. This machine has been out of use for a bit, it's previous state is unclear. It passes every hardware test I know to run (memtest, badblocks, "The Troubleshooter" suite). Are there tests which are particularly good at detecting the sort of problem you suspect? The problems I've had after getting past the disk label error haven't been entirely consistent, but are generally failures to find files on the DVD and lockups while installing. I thought there might be disc-related problem, so this morning I tried installing from the CDs. Now the GUI has locked up at package ifplugd-0.28-41.i586.rpm, and on vconsole 4 I find this: BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 00000055 EIP: 0060:[<c01727bb>] Tainted: G U VLI EFLAGS: 00210282 (2.6.18.2-34-default #1) EIP is at do_path_lookup+0x167/0x25f eax: f30cfed4 ebx: f0df2000 ecx: 00000000 sdx: df234f20 ds: 007b es: 007b ss: 0068 Process: y2base (pid: 3015, ti=f30ce000 task=f5537180 task.ti: f30ce000) Call Trace: getname+0x59/0xb0 __user_walk_fd+0x2f/0x40 vfs_stat_fd+0x19/0x40 sys_stat64+0xf/0x23 do_page_fault+0x27d/0x507 vfs_read+0x11e/0x15d copy_to_user+0x31/0x48 sys_newuname+0x2d/0x36 syscall_call+0x7/0xb EIP: [<c01727bb>] do_path_lookup+0x167/0x25f SS:ESP 0068:f30cfed4 and that's now scrolled off the screen by repititions of "VFS: busy inodes on changed media". https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=239770 ------- Comment #13 from fehr@novell.com 2007-02-21 11:08 MST ------- All this sounds very strange. If you add the -s option to parted you should only get a prompt if the commands you add on the command line are invalid or incomplete. Since your DVD is connected to the same controller as the harddisk there could very well be the controller responsible for both the harddisk and DVD problems. Unfortunately I am in no way a hardware specialist and do not have knowledge about general tools for hardware troubleshooting. There is a boot entry on the install medium which uses very conservative kernel settings for everything. This entry is called "Failsafe" in the boot prompt if install DVD. I would suggest to retry installation after selecting this "Failsafe" entry at boot screen. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=239770 ------- Comment #14 from me@shadsterling.com 2007-02-22 14:30 MST ------- I'd already tried install with safe options before posting, and had the same problem. Today I tried to install onto a different machine, with default options, and it completed successfully. So, if that was a problem with faulty hardware, I think the thing the installer could possibly do better is detect this kind of fault and report it to the user. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Here's why. Computer 1 - I have been running SUSE 10.2 for several months. I decided to add a small FAT16 partition for MSDSOS. I used the MSDSOS fdisk utility to delete all partitions and create the FAT16. I formatted under MSDOS, and was able to boot into it. Then I started the 10.2 install and got the above error. I tried all the suggested fixes. I even used "dd" to write zeros over the first few hundred sectors. I successfully installed WinXP and it ran flawlessly. I even tried the XP FIXMBR from the recovery console. I too thought it was a hardware problem. To verify it I slipped the drive into... Computer 2 (different maker different controller) - Same exact problem with installing 10.2. Must be the drive I thought. Then I tried installing SUSE 9.3 on this computer and it worked just fine. Aha! I thought, I must have cleared the problem. No. When I tried 10.2 it errored out again. The only common element on the failures was the 10.2 installation software. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
