[Bug 350956] New: rt2500usb module/interface fails to load correctly
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=350956 Summary: rt2500usb module/interface fails to load correctly Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: james@usr-local-bin.org QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Beta-Customer Created an attachment (id=188911) --> (https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=188911) dmesg lines I've filed this under Kernel but since it's a network adapter, someone may want to reallocate it... Just got a USB dongle that uses an RAlink chipset for my wife's laptop - this should be supported by the rt2x00-kmp-* package. It appears to be detected and the module is loaded but the interface goes down when it's handed over to NetworkManager. Attaching three files - relevant dmesg lines; /var/log/messages from it being plugged in; /var/log/NetworkManager from it being plugged in. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I grabbed the official source from the Ralink site and popped the firmware (rt73.bin) in /lib/firmware but still no dice. It has improved slightly in that the log entries about the device not entering state 3 no longer happen but I still can't see any wireless network in nm-applet. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Yes :-) It seems the problem is not at the kernel side. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=350956 User tambet@novell.com added comment https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=350956#c16 --- Comment #16 from Tambet Ingo <tambet@novell.com> 2008-01-03 08:34:25 MST --- I don't really understand the issue here. It says: "It appears to be detected and the module is loaded but the interface goes down when it's handed over to NetworkManager." but that's what NetworkManager does with all the devices on startup to make sure it knows the exact state of the system. There's also a couple of attached snippets of /var/log/NetworkManager but none of these contain any errors from wireless device activation. NetworkManager doesn't drive the wireless devices directly, everything goes through wpa_supplicant which requires device drivers to implement wext (wireless extensions) interface. If your card's driver doesn't do that, or does it incorrectly, you won't be able to use NetworkManager. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If I understand the issue correctly, the scan results are not displayed in NetworkManager applet, even though the driver scans fine when wireless tools (iwlist) are used. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

According to http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-wireless/msg04026.html it can't be easily fixed as there are two different hardware versions with two different chipsets but the same USB ID around. Sorry, it cannot be fixed, at least not in near future. Although it's manufacturer's fault, I agree that kernel should be able to workaround it. Unfortunately, kernel doesn't have an infrastructure to solve such things yet. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
