Tim Hardeck and I found the root cause.
After "dd" the "USB stick / hard disk image" onto a USB stick
"fdisk -l" on that USB stick shows that the Linux partition
is activated for booting.
After the system on that USB stick has booted once,
"fdisk -l" on that USB stick shows that the Linux partition
is no longer activated for booting.
At least my laptops require a partition to be activated for booting
so that the USB stick is recognized as bootable device.
My current workaround is to manually re-activate the
Linux partition for booting on my USB stick.
