[Bug 591696] New: Installation fails on Windows Virtual PC
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=591696 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=591696#c0 Summary: Installation fails on Windows Virtual PC Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Final Platform: x86 OS/Version: Windows 7 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: marc.bau@gmx.net QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; de; rv:1.9.2.2) Gecko/20100316 Firefox/3.6.2 There seems no way to get openSuSE running on Windows 7 Windows Virtual PC. I need to use Windows Virtual PC and cannot/don't like to use any other virtual machine product like vmware etc. (too expensive and not required) Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Create Virtual Machine with 1024MB RAM 2. Mount Install ISO to CDROM 3. Boot from ISO 4. Run setup... select KDE or Gnome 5. Let setup copy all files to VHD 6. If GUI mode setup is near end the Windows Virtual PC simply closes 7. Restarts won't help Actual Results: OpenSuse crashes, Windows Virtual PC closes, not usable, completely broken. Expected Results: OpenSuSE works well on Windows Virtual PC. Boot options "noreplace-paravirt i8042.noloop clock=pit" also haven't helped anything. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I cannot grab nor attach any logs if the machine crashes and the Virtual PC simply closes - if it starts up... I cannot do anything. As an alternative - I have tried and installed the LIVE CD after I tried it 4 days (~30 Installations) and this LIVE CD Install was successful out of the box. I do not understand why the Live CD should have other bit's than the normal DVD... but now SuSE starts up in Virtual PC. Virtual PC looks bad as the Microsoft Linux Drivers are not installed with the system. 800x600px with an S3 card - and no higher resolution is now possible. Maybe there is an RPM somewhere I could install...!? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I have Xp-home and win7-starter here around, but installation requirements for recent virtual pc version is Host: Windows 7 Home Basic, Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 7 Enterprise. see http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2b6d5c18-1441-47ea-8309-2545b08e11dd&displayLang=de so, no luck..... anyway: ...snip... 6. If GUI mode setup is near end the Windows Virtual PC simply closes ...snip... Actual Results: OpenSuse crashes, Windows Virtual PC closes, not usable, completely broken ...snip... so yes - the virtualization software may be broken. bug triggered by opensuse, imho. whenever a virtualization software crashes during guest setup, that is the first (and the very) problem which needs to be fixed. a guest never should be able to crash the emulation environment where it`s running inside. that may not only be a stability issue but also may be a security issue !!! as you can see, other vendors adress these: http://www.vmware.com/support/player2/doc/releasenotes_player2.html http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2007-4497 VMware Player 2.0.1 •This release fixes a security vulnerability that might allow a guest operating system user without administrator privileges to cause a host process to stop responding or exit unexpectedly, making the guest operating system unusable. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures assigned the following name to this issue: CVE-2007-4497. Thanks to Rafal Wojtczvk of McAfee for identifying and reporting this issue. i don`t yet see any fix for this one, for example: http://threatpost.com/en_us/blogs/microsoft-virtual-pc-flaw-lets-hackers-byp... http://www.coresecurity.com/content/virtual-pc-2007-hypervisor-memory-protec... maybe you found another bug in the microsoft product, maybe you have something others are just waiting for. ;) does virtualpc leave any log on close ? what about contacting microsoft about this problem? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If GUI mode setup is near end the Windows Virtual PC simply closes" So, what makes you sure that VirtualPC does NOT crash here and what makes you assume this is a bug of suse and not VirtualPC? What does the Windows Eventlog tell when VirtualPC closes? Any logging information from VirtualPC? Could you provide that information to identify the cause of this problem? Did you install all relevant patches/updates for VirtualPC and for your Windows? anyway, opensuse 11.2 is already EOL, so further digging here is meaningless (except the problem still exists in recent opensuse versions) ps:
I do not understand why the Live CD should have other bit's than the normal DVD... A live CD may behave differntly as it`s graphics hardware detection may run in a more safe/conservative fashin (compatibility vs speed/acceleration/resolution)
