Dear Harald, your settings in bootloader are wrong. If you select boot from MBR it means boot from your the first disk. In your case it is /dev/sda. It is cause why bootloader change your /dev/sda. If you add "Custom Boot Partition": /dev/sdb it is correct but the bug with detecting disk doesn't allow to correct mapping (hd1,1000009). But if it was detection done correctly your /etc/grub.conf should included (hd1) (hd1,0) and the second stage of installation was not started. :( I think that your idea was to install openSUSE 11.2 to your removable disk and after that play with it on the other PC/notebook. There exist better way how to do it. ;-) Using removable disk like the first disk on other machine: ---------------------------------------------------------- Start installation configure partitionig of disk and go to the bootlaoder settings. Click on tab "Boot Loader Installation" -> next button "Boot Loader Installation Details" There you change order of disk and select your removable disk like the first disk in order. Save changes via OK button. Select checkbox "Boot from Mater Boot Record" After that bootlaoder works with your removable disk like with the first disk in order (booting order from BIOS) and your /dev/sda is without any changes. After reboot (starting the second stage of installation) installation doesn't continue and you can see your previous boot menu from /dev/sda you have to manually add chainloader boot section which enable to boot on your removable disk and finish installation. (There is chance that instead of reboot kexec loads your new kernel and adding chainloader boot section is not necessary but sometime kexec doesn't work and it is called reboot) If installation is done you can add your removable disk to other machine and set it like the first boot device in BIOS and you have disk with booting OS.
