I confirm this bug. (openSUSE 13.1 B1)
I also confirm -- I'm getting the same thing: attempt to start apache2, long wait, apache2 does not start. Disabled SSL, disabled mod_perl, disabled PHP5 -- to no avail: apache2 still doesn't start. Same useless log messages. Perhaps these steps would work to reproduce the bug: - install 12.3 with apache2 and all updates - upgrade to 13.1 beta1 with all updates # rpm -q apache2 apache2-2.4.6-6.1.2.x86_64 # rpm -q apache2-prefork apache2-prefork-2.4.6-6.1.2.x86_64 # zypper verify Loading repository data... httpd2 is not a recognized command so I tried apache2ctl -t and got this:
httpd2: Syntax error on line 188 of /etc/apache2/httpd.conf: Could not open configuration file /etc/apache2/sysconfig.d/include.conf: No such file or directory
Same message with DUMP_MODULES
If, as root, there is httpd2 command then your *installation*"(not the package) is broken.. ensure that packages "apache2" "apache2-$mpm" where $mpm might be event, worker or prefork.. are installed and have matching versions. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The packages do work, however the upgrade path might be wrong.. there is no problem with any of the modules you mention, I am using the packages in 13.1 and identical packages in 12.3 in production machines for quite some time already. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

httpd2 is not a recognized command so I tried apache2ctl -t and got this:
httpd2: Syntax error on line 188 of /etc/apache2/httpd.conf: Could not open configuration file /etc/apache2/sysconfig.d/include.conf: No such file or directory

OK it does exist as root, but i get the same message as apache2ctl
That file is autogenerated..will be created after you issue systemctl restart apache2 .. to further debug problem you are seeing change line 188 from Include /etc/apache2/sysconfig.d/include.conf to IncludeOptional /etc/apache2/sysconfig.d/include.conf and try again. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

and try again.
Before that, try removing all apache packages ... zypper rm -u apache2 and reinstall. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

OK after re-installing it starts, but it still shows this in status:
/etc/init.d/apache2 status
Why are you doing that ? use systemctl..
Checking for httpd2:
unused apache2.service - The Apache Webserver Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/apache2.service; enabled) Active: active (running) since Tue 2013-10-15 12:33:10 EDT; 4s ago Process: 6225 ExecStop=/usr/sbin/start_apache2 -D SYSTEMD -DFOREGROUND -k graceful-stop (code=exited, status=1/FAILURE)
It works, what failed was the "stop" of the previously running daemon (see: it is active, running) I have an hypothesis, did you got apache installed directly from a DVD installation or some pre-made install media ? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Today I did "zypper ref; zypper up" and Apache2 is now working. Although I did not change anything in APACHE_MODULES, "systemctl status apache2.service" is now saying:
Module "systemd" is not installed, ignoring. Check the APACHE_MODULES setting in /etc/sysconfig/apache2
What is this "systemd" module?
The "systemd" module is tiny apache module allowing integration between systemd and apache. systemctl status apache2 will report the current status of the server and allows apache to be a Service of type "notify"
Do I need it?
Yes, it is required, you are getting this message because to fix this and a different associated issue the module has been moved from a loadable shared object to built-in into the server. (it is always loaded now, you can issue a2dismod systemd to avoid the warning) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I don't see systemd in the file list for apache.
Sure you don't , it is builtin into the main server executable...please read comment 22 carefully. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
