[Bug 245751] New: Xserver has to be started manually, graphics card Matrox G550 with DVI output used
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=245751
Summary: Xserver has to be started manually, graphics card Matrox
G550 with DVI output used
Product: openSUSE 10.2
Version: Final
Platform: i686
OS/Version: Other
Status: NEW
Severity: Normal
Priority: P5 - None
Component: X.Org
AssignedTo: sndirsch@novell.com
ReportedBy: wg.trinkwitz@gmx.de
QAContact: sndirsch@novell.com
Configuration: more details for software builds see appended files
- Pentium III (Coppermine),800 Mhz;
- Graphics Card: Matrox G550 AGP 32MB (1x VGA, 1x DVI)
- Monitor: TFT EIZO FlexScan L 568
- installations of OSS 10.0 32bit (Current Operating System: Linux pcgate
2.6.13-15.13-default #1 Tue Nov 28 13:43:50 UTC 2006 i686
Build Date: 18 March 2006)
and OSS 10.2 32bit (Current Operating System: Linux 2.6.18.2-34-default #1
SMP Mon Nov 27 11:46:27 UTC 2006 i686
Build Date: 28 November 2006)
completely separated istallations on their own /boot,/home and /- partitions
on 2. harddisk
- Windows Xp Pro on 1.harddisk
1. With different installations of OSS 10.2 and DVI connection and following
restart the screen else remains black after boot and indicates pixel frequency
fD = 0.0, fH = 64 kHz, fV = 60Hz or starts partly filled with corrupted KDE
startscreen.
After some installations (not in all cases) only the first start was running
successfully.
After pressing the "Input Signal Selection" button of the monitor the monitor
shows the correct KDE picture and works correctly; the frequency information
(information via separate button of the monitor)shows the resolution 1280x1024,
fH = 64 kHz, fV = 60 Hz. The same result can be produced with Strg+Alt+F1 and
Alt+F7 or startx if booted in failsafe mode. Every restart can be handled in
the same way. After Strg+Alt+F1 the textconsole can not be seen. But the
following Alt+F7 starts the screen.
One test showed the same above described behaviour after deletion of all
"Modeline"-lines in Section "Modes" in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
With VGA connection the OSS 10.2 installation works correctly with the
resolution 1280x1024, fH = 64 kHz, fV = 60 Hz.
2. The OSS 10.0 installation works correctly with VGA or DVI connection;the
frequency information shows the resolution 1280x1024, fH = 62,3 kHz, fV = 58,8
Hz.
3. Windows Xp Pro works without any problem with the resolution 1280x1024, fH =
64 kHz, fV = 60 Hz.

Well, you enabled 3D support in 10.0, which you didn't in 10.2 and some timing changes for monitor and modelines. To make sure, that it is not a configuration issue, copy the one of 10.0 to 10.2 and test again. If this doesn't help I'll take a closer look at the logfiles. This one looks suspicious for me: --- 10.0.log 2007-02-16 14:47:35.119042000 +0100 +++ 10.2.log 2007-02-16 14:49:47.061968000 +0100 [...] -(II) Truncating PCI BIOS Length to 36864 +(II) Attempted to read BIOS 64KB from /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:01:00.0/rom: +got 36KB (--) MGA(0): Video BIOS info block at offset 0x07CE0 -(WW) MGA(0): Video BIOS info block not detected! -(II) MGA(0): MGABios.RamdacType = 0x0 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

The monitor is switched to "Power saving" mode. Strg+Alt+F1 and Alt+F7 don`t work. After reinstalling the original xorg.conf OSS 10.2 runs as described in the bugreport again. I performed a test with OSS 10.0 without 3D-acceleration (deactivated via SaX2, no line Load "dri" in Section "Module" existed in xorg.conf any longer) and the system runs correctly. Additional remark for OSS 10.0: Via "Screen information" (monitor button) I can follow up the change of frequencies fH and fV between SUSE boot screen (resolution = 1280x1024, fH = 64 kHz, fV = 60 Hz, ??framebuffer??) and the following ??Xserver?? screen (resolution = 1280x1024, fH = 62,3 kHz, fV = 58,8 Hz) as described in the bugreport and corresponding to "Modeline" in xorg.conf. If I comment all "Modeline"-lines in Section "Modes" in /etc/X11/xorg.conf and restart the system it works correctly but without previously described change of frequencies; resolution = 1280x1024, fH = 64 kHz, fV = 60 Hz. If the timing information is not correct this is fatal because the timings are used to create a modeline. There is not only one modeline but the one from the DDC record is part of as soon as DDC provides one I can't see why the mode provided by DDC should be wrong ? The timing is valid and within the h/vsync range I'm sorry but this can only be influenced manually in the sax2 batch mode ==> WONTFIX -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=245751 ------- Comment #13 from sndirsch@novell.com 2007-02-19 04:17 MST ------- So the modeline came from DDC? Obviously this modeline is bogus. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=245751 ------- Comment #14 from eich@novell.com 2007-02-19 05:35 MST ------- Yes, Stefan is right. That's what should be done. DDC provides enough information to identify the display and look it up in a blacklist. That's what's going to happen in X.Org in the future. We should maintain a blacklist based on information users provide to us and share this information with the upstream project. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=245751 ------- Comment #15 from wg.trinkwitz@gmx.de 2007-02-19 07:32 MST ------- Perhaps the information is helpful concerning DDC data: in contrast to OSS 10.0 where the frequencies fH and fV are switched from 64 kHz to 62.3 kHz and 60 Hz to 58.8 Hz after booting, fH and fV are not switched in OSS 10.2 with the modified config file of OSS 10.0 (Section "Files" modified only) FH remains at 64 kHz and fV remains at 60 Hz from the beginning of boot. Which part has to be changed in a config file, automatically generated by SaX after configuration changes for example? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
