(Of course one can do a right click one choose some action or do some action with a plasmoid.) This was better with KDE 4.1 where one could do a left click somewhere and the Dashboard vanished. With KDE 4.2 this is only available via the cashew -> Dashboard ausblenden (maybe fade out), which is of course not available with this Workspace setting. You can also press ESC or Ctrl+F12 (dashboard shortcut) I found left clicking somewhere very annoying, better get the cashew for the dashboard even if it the Desktop is set to "workspace without toolbox"
This would also be my preferred solution.
This is something that should be solved upstream, would you mind filing an upstream report and resolving this one here with the url?
