[Bug 440048] New: After installation X11/Xorg does not work
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=440048 Summary: After installation X11/Xorg does not work Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Beta 3 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: sndirsch@novell.com ReportedBy: f.de.kruijf@hetnet.nl QAContact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: --- After installation of openSUSE 11.1 Beta3 on my Toshiba Satellite A30 with an Intel 855GM graphical chipset kdm does not start. After the initial installation the system boots for the first time. When going to level 5 strange screens appear and finally the console returns ending in a prompt for the userid. Logging in as root, init 3 and starting sax2 without any parameter also after some stange screens the normal sax screen appears asking to accept the configuration. Pressing OK the system returns to the console. Giving init 5 again strange screens appear but no KDE login screen. Worse, the system hangs with a lot of disk activity. I will attach the Xorg.0.log, SaX.log and Xorg.99.log. Please ask what more logs I should provide. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Hitting CTRL+ALT+backspace twice restarts X and takes you to the GDM login screen which appears to be functioning just fine, no glitches. As soon as you try logging in, you're once again presented with a black screen. I also tested Fedora core 10 while it was still in rawhide on this same laptop and there were many bug reports against the Xorg intel driver with this particular chipset. I got rid of Fedora before the final release of FC10 so I'm not sure what they ended up doing with it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It has the same problem as in Beta5 with kdm. Not even the login screen for KDE appears. At the end of kdm.log I found: See attached file kdm.log (complete) After that I installed gdm with its dependancies. I changed in /etc/sysconfig/dispaymanager kdm4 to gdm. Now I do get the GNOME login screen with my usersname, but after entering the password I end up to have a black screen with a white mouse pointer that I can move around. Nothing else is possible. I will attach /var/log/gdm/:0*.log renamed to 0*.log aswell. After booting into runlevel 3 I noticed that this command returns an empty string. I also tried 'echo "$(pam-config -q -fp)"', whithout ', which works without an error message and returns an empty line. "whereis pam-config" gives: pam-config: /usr/sbin/pam-config /usr/share/man/man8/pam-config.8.gz I tried changing pam-config by /usr/sbin/pam-config and the result was that the error message about line 75 disappeared in kdm.log but in the end the result is the same: After some flickering of the screen and some stripes and dots on it, I return on level 5 in the console. The question Why the line 75 error message? is quite unclear to me. I don't have an explanation. However this is a minor issue and not really relevant here. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The result was the same. However inspection of /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager shows that it contains a line DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm4". Strange I would have expected kdm3. So I changed it to kdm3 and I did get a login screen, not the one I see on another 11.1 system. After this I see... a KDE4 environment. Again I see in /var/log/kdm.log the error message about line 75, but this has apparently no strange effect. I also changed kdm4 to kdm, but there is no difference between the two. Only kdm3 makes a difference although I get KDE4. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
