[Bug 259685] New: KDE screensavers do not start automatically at all.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=259685 Summary: KDE screensavers do not start automatically at all. Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: vkrevs@yahoo.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Hi. I'm running openSUSE 10.2 for x86_64 on a Dell 9400 notebook. The latest KDE 3.5.6 packages from http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE3/openSUSE_10.2/ and http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Backports/openSUSE_10.2/ are installed. The KDE screensaver is set to "Random" and configured to start after 4 minutes of inactivity via Control Center. The problem that it never starts. Not after 4 minutes, nor after 8 or 30 minutes. If I start "xscreensaver" in the background and disable KDE screensaver, then screensavers start correctly. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=259685 ------- Comment #2 from vkrevs@yahoo.com 2007-04-01 03:19 MST ------- Hi. I've made some progress with this issue. My KDE session is configured to automatically start gnome-settings-daemon via a symlink in .kde/Autostart/. If I remove this symlink, log off, and log in again, then gnome-settings-daemon is not running, and KDE screensavers starts as expected and everything works fine. However, when gnome-settings-daemon is running under KDE (either having been started via the symlink or as a result of starting any Gnome/GTK application), KDE screensaver appears t be disabled and Gnome screensaver takes over. If I disable gnome screensaver completely via gnome-screensaver-preferences, then no screensavers start ever. If I configure gnome-screensaver to start in 8 minutes, then it starts in 8 minutes. So the bug really is that gnome-screensaver appears to disable the KDE screensaver, and its doubtfull that any KDE user would want that. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=259685 ------- Comment #5 from rodrigo@novell.com 2007-04-02 11:52 MST ------- gnome-settings-daemon starts either gnome-screensaver or xscreensaver, so the problem is really why you need g-s-d to be autostarted? g-s-d expects to be run on a GNOME session, so it does not only this, but other gnome-only things that might not fit on a KDE session -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=259685 ------- Comment #6 from vkrevs@yahoo.com 2007-04-02 14:12 MST ------- Just like the many ordinary users out these, I need to use GTK applications such as Thunderbird and Firefox from KDE. And we all autostart g-s-d in order to have the same font DPI and hence font sizes in both KDE and GTK applications - this is the only solution I am aware of. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=259685 ------- Comment #7 from rodrigo@novell.com 2007-04-09 02:20 MST ------- I guess we could add code to g-s-d to detect if it's on a KDE session rather than GNOME and start kscreensaver if so (or not start anything at all, since I guess it would have been started by KDE scripts).
