No, I don't think that this is the right solution. Installing a pattern means trying to install all required/recommended packages. Zypper should be able to do this.
Isn't PoolItem pattern; if (!pattern.isSatisfied()) Resolver::addRequire(Capability(pattern->name(), ResKind::pattern)); else tell_the_user("already installed"); enough for 'zypper install -t pattern foo'?
The current satisfied state doesn't matter here, as some recommended packages that are installable may be still missing.
Can you explain more? I thought that pattern.isSatisfied() means 'installed' from the user's point of view. It is presented as installed to the user. So what do you mean the satisfied state does not matter here? What does it mean to the satisfied state if some of the recommends are missing (or when is a pattern considered satisfied)? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Regarding #6: "satisfied" means that all required packages are installed.
isSatisfied == installed is good enough for zypper.
OK. Yes, but there is this this special case of patterns which have only recommends...
But as with packages, there should be a way to "reinstall" a pattern. You reinstall a package if you
Sure, but that's another story worth a separate bug report. Currently zypper uses this to do the reinstall: if (installed && force) { s.setStatus(ui::S_Install); DBG << s << " install: forcing reinstall" << endl; } Which only will 'reinstall' the pattern (meaning nothing), but will not force reinstall of the packages. I'd say we require an API in libzypp which would take care of this for all kinds of solvables.
deleted some files by accident. The semantics for pattern reinstall is that the solver tries to fulfill as many recommends as possible.
Is it? My guess would be a forced reinstall of all underlying requirements (and recommends unless --no-recommends is used). Something similar like with packages cannot happen with patterns - if you remove a required package, the pattern will be reported as 'not installed' (not satisfied). So you can just install it again to fill in the requirements (and recommends). What you describe is a possiblity to add recommended packages to an already satisfied pattern. That's IMO something different than what would people name 'reinstalling of a pattern' I think we should discuss this on software-mgmt ML. I was just comparing the yast2 sw_single c/c++ development pattern with the one offered by zypper. I mean what do I _need_ to develop in C/C++ ??
Did you find a difference? Zypper will install all the packages the pattern requires and recommends (unless --no-recommends is used). Should be the same in yast with the difference that you can manually deselect the packages you don't want. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Re: comment #14 by Jan:
I'm not talking about some new feature, I'm just explaining what the solver does when you ask it to install a pattern. You're wrong if you think that re-installing a pattern means nothing, it will not reinstall the packages but it will install all packages that are recommended by the pattern and not currently installed.
I see. So i say we should rethink this :O) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

comment #11 and 2) The solver does not take care if patterns are satisfied or not. It will be installed if a user has selected it or is selected for installation due to dependencies.
And that is what i consider weird - why should it select for installation, if it is already satisified? (except for reinstallation, but that's something we should work on yet after 11.0).
The state reflects only the solver result and will not be used for the next run. (That was a "feature" in the old solver which produced A LOT of problems)
I don't understand this, can you explain? (on irc, or mail, or here). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
