[Bug 567316] New: An XGL package is not available in openSUSE >= 11.1.
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=567316 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=567316#c0 Summary: An XGL package is not available in openSUSE >= 11.1. Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Final Platform: 32bit OS/Version: openSUSE 11.2 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: bnc-team-xorg-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: zbuhman@gmail.com QAContact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.6) Gecko/20091201 Firefox/3.5.6 Though one could argue that because XGL is Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install openSUSE 11.0 (last version to include XGL with which to test relative performance with) with desktop effects, xgl, compiz-fusion (shortened to 'compiz' throughout the rest of this report), kde4 (kwin), etc... 1a. The test system in this case, is using a Radeon 9250. (I have had similar results with fglrx on a Radeon Xpress 200m as well; I suspect many other (esp. older/crippled radeons) may have similar results 2. Test compositing effects with XGL and then AIGLX making note of how each "feels" as well as real benchmarks. One could also compare Compiz vs. Kwin if they wish. Though, in my experience, Kwin is already slower than Compiz, it will be yet slower when used in conjunction with AIGLX (this part was included to eliminate Compiz as a potential source for blame/confusion). Actual Results: XGL, as "hackish" and outdated as it is, still outperforms AIGLX on (esp older) ATI cards (esp. ones too old for a compatible Catalyst driver which instead, as a result, *need* to use the Radeon module). (furthermore, it might be noted that using XGL with Compiz in 11.0 (the latest from the buildservice at the time) using the Radeon 9250 with the open source radeon module, acceptable framerates (around 100fps or so)(of course depending on what effects were enabled) were achievable whereas even on AIGLX in 11.2 (or 11.0) framerates are excruciatingly low whenever anything "real" is being done. For example, when rotating the "XGL" cube (transparent with fish/etc..) framerates might have dropped from 100 to 40-50 or so, but it was still mildly acceptable whereas using the same effects with AIGLX the framerate would drop from 20 to about 0.1fps; this is totally unacceptable, of course) Expected Results: Because AIGLX *is* more or less "the future" of Xorg's compositing, and is less "hackish" than XGL it should, inherently, therefore, have higher performance than XGL on this hardware. However, because it doesn't, even though the XGL code has indeed been removed from freedesktop.org's git and isn't in active development, and because AIGLX still, in some cases, as shown, does not have better performance than XGL (which is really what counts in this case; no matter how "well" the software is written, if it has poor performance, it is more or less rendered useless) it is my proposal that an XGL package still be readily installable and maintained in future releases (at least for 11.3 or so). Not sure how to categorize this. Since I, personally, would consider this of somewhat severe importance (XGL+Compiz, in my humble opinion, while doing normal desktop operations, is smoother than no compositing (which is in turn, faster than AIGLX)) due to it severely subtracting from one's overall experience/sanity caused by the slower redrawing one experiences on the same hardware without composting whatsoever, and because this was included in previous releases and has regressed in more recent ones, I would consider this to fit with the severity I have chosen. However, I realize that this may also be considered an enhancement; feel free to change this if it is deemed more appropriate. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Therefore, it is my proposal that an XGL package be maintained along with the usual configuration utilities (gnome-xgl-switch et al.) until such a time that AIGLX exceed's XGL's performance." -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
