[Bug 204760] New: installation still takes too long
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=204760 Summary: installation still takes too long Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Alpha 4 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: jnelson-suse@jamponi.net QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Using autoyast and a minimal pattern (just 'base'), an install takes about 15 minutes on one of my machines. On the exact same machine, Centos Server 4.3 takes 5 minutes. While 15 minutes is a big improvement from "over an hour" for 10.1, it's still too long and the more packages installed the worse it gets. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

The report is specific to slowness /in the installer/ and/or rpm. By far, profiling shows that y2base is the largest CPU and memory consumer, far more than RPM even. If that is true, then more than 50% of the install time is not the actual installation of rpms but whatever the installer is doing /besides/ calling out to RPM. I'm very willing to get my hands into this to determine the exact causes of slowness, but the fact is it /is/ a slower install process, all other things (rpm-based distro, number and size of packages, installation media, machine, etc...) being equal. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

This slowness is something we're constantly improving but nothing beeing worth a bugreport, the team is working on this. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
