[Bug 333708] New: SaX2 refuses dual card setup
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=333708 Summary: SaX2 refuses dual card setup Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: SaX2 AssignedTo: ms@novell.com ReportedBy: estellnb@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Other SaX2 recognizes both graphics cards correctly:
SaX2 -p Chip: 0 is -> ATI 3D Rage IIC 215IIC 00:10:0 0x1002 0x4756 PCI fbdev Chip: 1 is -> ATI Rage 128 RF 01:00:0 0x1002 0x5246 AGP ati
Chip 0: plugged into PCI slot Chip 1: plugged into AGP slot It is possible to invoke SaX2 for each graphics card using SaX2 -c 0 SaX2 -c 1 even though the VGA-out of PCI-Chip0 will always stay dead. In a fact SaX always accesses AGP-Chip1 but nonetheless seems to believe that it speaks with PCI-Chip0 when invoked with -c 0, because it claims that no 3D-Acceleration is available for PCI-Chip 0. To me it looks like a device node access problem, which may have been caused by device renamings introduced with OpenSuse 10.3. I can not remember this having been a problem any time befor (has worked with OpenSuse 10.2). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=333708#c1 --- Comment #1 from Elmar Stellnberger <estellnb@gmail.com> 2007-10-14 04:06:34 MST --- When invoking SaX2 to configure both cards in xinerama or dual monitor setup a wrong xorg.conf is produced (only one monitor section, incomplete device section; see attachement). SaX2 -m 0=ati,1=ati The -s and -r switches do not change anything about this though the -V switch will make it start for VGA out of Chip1. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The test X-Server is at first started correctly, but then does not show up any handle to assent or break and exit from the resolution test (empty screen displayed, no reaction on ESC or Ctrl-Alt-\). Once a lock at /tmp/* has prevented me from trying it again, once requesting the test screen under runlevel 5 has made my computer crash (like a power off; no response on pings). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

But I think the probeonly call has failed with both ati drivers active so the result is somewhat unusable. I think we had that problems in former times, it's not possible to use the ati driver twice in a dualhead environment -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=333708#c12 --- Comment #12 from Elmar Stellnberger <estellnb@gmail.com> 2007-10-15 08:57:16 MST --- No, it simply does not work: SaX2 0=ati: activates Card 1 and shows driver of Card1. SaX2 -i 0=ati: activates Card 0 but shows driver of card1. Additionally the monitor plugged onto card0 displays nothing but an error message "invalid frequency" because it is run with the modelines for monitor of card1. Nevertheless plugging monitor1 off and monitor0 on and off again helps. When the configuration is saved it does merely apply to Card 1: Section "Device" BoardName "Rage 128 RF" BusID "1:0:0" Driver "ati" Identifier "Device[0]" VendorName "ATI" EndSection -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Running it in Xinerama or DualHead mode by activating the respective layout sections is refused (likely because of the said bug). Trying to start another X server for the other graphics card by the use of the -sharevts option has been honored with a crash. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If this doesn't help I recommend to replace both gfx cards with a proper dualhead AGP card. This sounds rude I know ... I'm afraid I need to close this bug as WONTFIX. It's really a corner case ... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Unsuspecting users should be prevented from further harm like * waste of time by unsuccessful configuration attempts * system decay by crashes (f.e.: needed to press [Ctrl][Alt][\] after login in runlevel 3 because the longin shell kept hanging) Could you please give me a reference to the upstream bug (ATI driver)? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
