[Bug 222503] New: Dell P991 monitor not recognized, resulting in bad user experience
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222503 Summary: Dell P991 monitor not recognized, resulting in bad user experience Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Beta 2 plus Platform: i586 OS/Version: Linux Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: richard.bos@xs4all.nl QAContact: jsrain@novell.com suse-10.2 does not recognize by graphic system, an Nvidia monitor card + a DELL P991 monitor. The monitor is used with many many suse versions. The bad thing is, that running sax2 in (init 3) does not work, as the screen resolution is really awfull. The screen size is okay, but inside the screen the characters are huge (there are e.g. only 3 characters possible from frop top to bottom)! After the 1st installation, I thought the installation went bad and as such I decided to re-install the suse-10.2. (because working in kde was impossible, gnome was not installed and as such could not be tested. I tried to install gnome via the command line (ncurses yast), but I quited for the reason I don't remember. During the second install I left the monitor characteristics to vesa 1280x1024 and now I can more or less use the system, but it is not pleasant. suse102b2:~ # hwinfo --monitor 23: None 00.0: 10000 Monitor [Created at fb.71] Unique ID: rdCR.EY_qmtb9YY0 Hardware Class: monitor Model: "Generic Monitor" Vendor: "Generic" ===========>> This should be DELL P991 Device: "Monitor" Resolution: 1280x1024@77Hz Driver Info #0: Max. I'm sorry if there is no DDC information from the monitor I cannot create a useful CDB entry
It used to work in many previous suse versions. The monitor has always been detected correctly (AFAIR).
From my suse 10.2beta cdb Monitor file I have this: #============================================== # P991 #---------------------------------------------- DELL:P991 { DDC=DEL5178 Option=DPMS Hsync=30-107 Vsync=48-120 }
So the entry is there. The monitor supports it: "using Display Data Channel (DDC) protocols so the system can configure itself and optimize the monitor settings" http://support.ap.dell.com/support/systemsinfo/document.aspx?c=ap&l=en&s=gen&~f=lg&~file=/monitors/p991/en/spec.htm suse-10.2beta: # hwinfo --monitor 23: None 00.0: 10000 Monitor [Created at fb.71] Unique ID: rdCR.EY_qmtb9YY0 Hardware Class: monitor Model: "Generic Monitor" Vendor: "Generic" Device: "Monitor" Resolution: 1280x1024@77Hz Driver Info #0: Max. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222503 ------- Comment #11 from snwint@novell.com 2006-11-22 08:02 MST ------- Thanks, but in your case the monitor is never detected (unlike with Richard, where there seems to be a degradation from 10.0). Anyway, the only difference to 10.0 I can think of is that we use the cpu emulation even for i386. So a thing to try would be hwprobe=-cpuemu hwinfo --monitor and to see if this helps (on 10.2). Another issue, namely with cards with several connectors (or notebooks) is to check more ports (default is 2, max 4): hwprobe=+bios.ddc.ports=4,-cpuemu hwinfo --monitor but be careful, it might hang. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Note that a working monitor detection is nearly always a graphics card issue and not monitor dependent (unless it is a really old monitor). The detection code relies on the Video BIOS to get it right; sorry, nothing I can do if it does not work. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222503 ------- Comment #17 from mrmazda@ij.net 2006-11-23 03:39 MST ------- How new does a graphics card need to be to expect DDC monitor detection to work? I could understand Tseng and MGA from 1996 or 1997 to not work, but I tried also NForce2 MX400 and get the exact same failure on the same machine on both 10.0 and 10.2. Could it be that Sony (Dell P991) displays made in 2000 qualify as "really old", lacking DDC support? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222503 ------- Comment #18 from snwint@novell.com 2006-11-23 04:06 MST ------- I don't really have an answer to that. The monitor almost certainly has DDC support. Even my old Iiyama of ~ '95 did. You can look at your xorg log and see if the native chipset driver got anything out of it. The problem is more the Video BIOS itself (if, say the boot loader on the install CD selects a resolution > 1024x768, it is a sure sign that the Video BIOS works) or running the BIOS from Linux. Unfortunately on all my test machines here it works just nicely. :-( -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222503 ------- Comment #19 from mrmazda@ij.net 2006-11-23 06:34 MST ------- Richard, have you ever used SonyDAS software on your P991? I have 2 P991s made in July 2000 and 1 made in March 2000. On all 4 video cards I tested, ET6100, TNT2, G400 & GF2MX400, DDC works on neither July P991, but does work on the March P991. I have used the SonyDAS software to adjust both July P991s, but not the March. Steffen, would the output of hwinfo --monitor for the one that DDC works on be of any use here? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222503 ------- Comment #20 from snwint@novell.com 2006-11-23 06:47 MST ------- No, I don't think so. The point that worried me most about this report was that Richard saw a regression from 10.0 to 10.2, and that has been shown not to be the case. So this is back to the (unfortunate) 'does not work sometimes' situation. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Richard, have you ever used SonyDAS software on your P991? No, I never used nor did I ever hear about it.
