[Bug 389944] New: booting xen results in system freeze / hang
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=389944 Summary: booting xen results in system freeze / hang Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Factory Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Xen AssignedTo: cgriffin@novell.com ReportedBy: willem@neteyes.nl QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Beta-Customer Hi, Trying to install and boot with latest xen kernel (2.6.25.3-2) results in my system freezing during boot (dell D520). System is non responsive and need to be shutdown by using the power button. There is a slight difference when booting to init level 3 compaired to level 5, but runlevel 3 boot also stalls. There are no evident errors & I will need help to troubleshoot. installed xen packages; xen-3.2.1_16881_01-8 xen-tools-3.2.1_16881_01-8 xen-doc-pdf-3.2.1_16881_01-8 kernel-xen-2.6.25.3-2 xen-doc-html-3.2.1_16881_01-8 xen-libs-3.2.1_16881_01-8 I'll try to do some more tests and will attach my boot and message logs. Do I need to attach another system? Or can I boot using certain switches that will write all output to file and screen? Any chance in pointing me to relevant info or howto's? Thanks! To collect kernel messages, too, you may need to also specify "xencons=xvc" on the kernel command line. I'll let you know how it goes and see if I can get my hands on the cable! :) ps. thanks for the tip, Indeed I found similar posts here on the matter. It might be of interest to know that after forcing the network service not to start (chkconfig network -f) the boot progressed further than usual.. up to the point that a message about starting peth0 appeared. Could this indicate a conflict with the xen kernel combined with my network setup? I'll attach the boot.msg when booting with network service set to off. I'll still try to get that serial cable but hoping this is a new lead? To do this, edit /etc/xen/xend-config.sxp and change this line: (network-script network-bridge) to this line: (network-script ) With this change in place, the should be nothing that is trying to create peth0. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

That booted it up all the way into my users X session. Everything seemed normal up to the point that I started the network service. Also, rather than starting the networking stuff all at once, could you try manually loading just the respective kernel modules? Finally, attaching a boot.msg from a native kernel boot might also be helpful (not the least because of the significant number of "system 00:0?: io??? range 0x????-0x???? could not be reserved" messages in the Xen boot). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

That gets thing running for 10~15 seconds and I notice the fan spinning up. System is still responsive but I've lost keyboard input in my terminal consoles. Fire up gnome-system-monitor using the gnome pannel and see Klogd eating up one of my CPU cores. As soon as I kill the process all hangs like in point 4, mouse still movable but no other action possible other than the hard switch off... As a note, I almost did a factory update but then wondered if it is best to keep my system as it is or see if new updates will sort this out? I think there is also a kernel update? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=389944 User jbeulich@novell.com added comment https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=389944#c15 Jan Beulich <jbeulich@novell.com> changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEW |NEEDINFO Info Provider| |willem@neteyes.nl --- Comment #15 from Jan Beulich <jbeulich@novell.com> 2008-05-21 03:42:42 MST --- If you see klogd using a full CPU's bandwidth, then this is a pretty certain indication that you get (huge amounts of) kernel messages - if you can't log them over serial, I would assume you still should be able to see them on the screen, provided you switch to the kernel console before they start appearing. Nevertheless it may still be necessary to find a way to log them because we may need to see the intitial one(s) and/or they may be scrolling by too fast for you to even read them. Comparing the boot messages you provided doesn't yield any significant difference. Doing an update on your system would not do any bad here I would think - in the best (but unlikely) case the problem's just gone afterwards, but we won't lose information by you doing this. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
