When trying to start matlab (after the license manager has been brought up) the following message is displayed: Opening log file: /home/dave/java.log.5109 I have attached the log file. "The Java HotSpot VM cannot expand its heap size if memory is completely allocated and no swap space is available. This can occur, for example, when several applications are running simultaneously. When this happens, the VM will exit after printing a message similar to the following. Exception java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: requested <size> bytes. Out of swap space? If you see this symptom, consider increasing the available swap space by allocating more of your disk for virtual memory and/or by limiting the number of applications you run simultaneously. You can also decrease your usage of memory by reducing the value of the -Xmx flag, which limits the size of the Java object heap." Does this help? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

My system has 1 gig of RAM and 1 gig of swap space. Running "top" verifies that I have both free RAM and the swap space is mostly free. How can I use the -Xmx flag? Matlab is calling the jvm. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=331873#c3 Sonja Krause-Harder <skh@novell.com> changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEW |RESOLVED Resolution| |INVALID --- Comment #3 from Sonja Krause-Harder <skh@novell.com> 2007-10-09 01:41:31 MST --- Find out if, and where, in the settings of MatLab you can give additional parameters to the jvm. I'm sorry I can't help you there, as I do not have the program. You can also try to set the flags in the _JAVA_OPTIONS environment variable. The issue is being tracked at http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=4697804 As we only repackage the pre-built java binaries provided by Sun and do not have access to the sources, and as this looks like a Sun Java issue to me, I'm closing this bug. (It may also be worth trying if it works with java 1.6, which is also available in 10.3) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=331873#c4 --- Comment #4 from David Bekker <phyrexicaid@gmail.com> 2007-10-09 01:46:32 MST --- I will try install java 1.6 at university today. The only java option I can find for matlab is the -nojvm option, which allows me to run matlab without a gui. Should 1.6 fix this issue I will add a comment. I don't understand why 1.5 is installed by default instead of 1.6? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Unfortunately I cannot recall if it was java 1.5 or 1.6.
