[Bug 971695] New: System hangs & reboots every few days after switching from kernel-default-4.1.13-5.1 to kernel-default-4.1.15-8.1
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=971695 Bug ID: 971695 Summary: System hangs & reboots every few days after switching from kernel-default-4.1.13-5.1 to kernel-default-4.1.15-8.1 Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 42.1 Hardware: x86-64 OS: openSUSE 42.1 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel Assignee: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: cdugal@pico.ca QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/49.0.2623.87 Safari/537.36 Build Identifier: My system has been stable up to and including kernel-default-4.1.13-5.1. After upgrading to kernel-default-4.1.15-8.1, my system randomly hangs from a couple times a day to over a week. After hanging for a minute or so, the system reboots on its own. There are no signs of an upcoming hang--everything just stops (at least when using a graphical interface). The screen stays with the same image, and the soundcard loops over its buffer. I didn't see anything interesting in the system journal--it just abruptly ends. I have also noticed that my system rebooted on occasion when nobody was using it or even logged in. Unfortunately, I only have one such system, so I cannot confirm any reproducibility elsewhere. My system started hanging shortly after rebooting to kernel-default-4.1.15-8.1. I tried testing my memory for a couple hours, and it seemed to check out. I reverted back to kernel-default-4.1.13-5.1 and my system has been running smoothly for 19 days now, so it appears that kernel-default-4.1.15-8.1 causes my system to hang randomly. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Upgrade from kernel-default-4.1.13-5.1 to kernel-default-4.1.15-8.1 2. Wait a few days 3. System hangs for a minute then reboots Actual Results: Screen freezes with last image. Last second or so of sound loops. Mouse & keyboard unresponsive. System reboots by itself after a minute or so. No log about the crash is retained (other than the lack of any normal system shutdown messages). Expected Results: No hanging, just like kernel-default-4.1.13-5.1. I describe myself as an intermediate home user of Linux. I am not sure how to get additional information about what causes my system to hang, but I am willing to try to troubleshoot the issue with some guidance (even if it means having my system randomly hang a few more times). -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Your problem may look similar, but it's likely a different problem. 4.1.20 had a known problem in USB, and this got fixed in 4.1.21. But better to try 4.1.25 in OBS Kernel:openSUSE-42.1 repo.
(And even if it were the same bug, any adjustment in X11 driver would be useless because Clifford's issue is about xhci, apparently.)
I was too fast. Today two (2) freezes and reboots, one during a "Back in Time" backup session, while writing on an NTFS USB 3.0 external HDD. Last time it took me DAYS to recover the disk from an old XP box and CHKDSK :-(((((((( Added OBS Kernel:openSUSE-42.1 repo, prio 20. Upgraded to 4.1.25 as written. Multiversion kernels are enabled, latest, running and 4.1.13-5.1. Tested and worked a lot since then, and 4.1.25 seemed to be stable / solving the issue. Never had a freeze with 4.1.25. But because I didn't change the repository config after that, Kernel:openSUSE-42.1 repo stayed active in prio 20, and my machine is now on 4.1.26-4.g294632f-default sinceyesterday evening, automatically. Takashi, you've mentioned a fixed in 4.1.21 USB bug, and that Cliffords problem was related to xhci_hcd. I've installed (yast's) Kernel KDUMP. Captured a freeze and/or following crash with a kernel > 4.1.13 but < 4.1.25. And have also lines with [xhci_hcd] which looked at first very similar to what Clifford uploaded before. Please advice what I should do? Should I open a new bug? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
