Workaround: the log says to run database recovery, and so I did it (using the sample script from http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Speed_up_Package_Manager_Stack#Sample_script though). Fixed! They are also not a problem in rpm, but in the berkeley db implementation (which is pretty much un-debuggable). My standard advise is to do 'rpm --rebuilddb' and see if things work again.
