[Bug 204742] New: Kickoff improvements / usability / consistency
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=204742 Summary: Kickoff improvements / usability / consistency Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Alpha 4 Platform: 64bit OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE AssignedTo: kde-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: one_way@online.de QAContact: qa@suse.de I think the new "kickoff" menu is a quite interesting concept. But it takes same time to get used to it. A few points that somehow "don't feel right": 1. Sometimes just moving the mouse pointer over an item opens the next subitem, sometimes you have to click to achieve this. E.g.: Kickoff-menu is opened by just moving the mouse pointer over "Geeko". Instinctively clicking in addition to that often closes the menu again :(. Browsing through "all programs" (classic menu structure) requires the user to explicitely click on every submenu, hovering the pointer achieves nothing. Browsing the tabs at the bottom works with both hovering and clicking. The delay is a bit to slacky, however. 2. More configurability (I guess this is coming in future versions). I'd like e.g. the sequence of the buttoms at the bottom configurably (and the new "Geeko"-icon doesn't fit at all in my desktop look ;). 3. "Leave"-Tab: Somehow this part feels quite awkward, too many mouseclicks are necessary, the requester asking for confirmation does never appear in the same place (center of screen), but always somewhere else. And, IMHO, once you have clicked your (long) way through to the "shutdown" button (or so), you shouldn't need another reconfirmation. 4. Is Beagle really necessary?? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=204742 ------- Comment #1 from stbinner@suse.de 2006-09-10 03:41 MST ------- 1) We could ignore an immediate mouse click after menu opening. The delay of activating tabs by depends on your position and into what directions your mouse pointer is moving. Sorry, I cannot explain the algorithm better. :-) 3) All those confirmation dialogs are planned to be exchanged with something different (and afaik not requiring additional click for logout/shutdown). 4) Beagle is necessary for file content searches. You can stop Beagle and continue fine with other searches. Later you will be also able to deinstall Beagle. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=204742 ------- Comment #2 from dmueller@novell.com 2006-09-10 13:31 MST ------- 1) was already fixed, it regressed due to the animated popup. I sort of hacked around that already, but its not yet in the package. We decided against hover-activate in the all applications menu because we feared it will be really confusing for our test persons. 2) what exactly do you want to change in the tab order? add new tabs? which? 3) the leave stuff is really work in progress. we plan to add a delayed abort option instead of the additional confirmation. 4) no, beagle is optional, but you will loose features. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=204742 ------- Comment #3 from one_way@online.de 2006-09-10 13:52 MST ------- Thanks for the quick feedback! 1) Well, I was confused by the fact that hover-activate is sometimes on and sometimes not. Maybe that's the transition shock from the classical KDE menu ;)? Getting used to it... 2) That's probably a matter of personal taste. I'd like to have the "All programs" tab nearer at hand. Moreover, I don't really know which criteria qualify a program/document for "Favorite" in the current implementation. And "Recently used" (documents) at the moment is for me mostly filled with random fragments of web pages and other stuff called by konqueror, which is not that useful. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=204742 ------- Comment #4 from one_way@online.de 2006-09-11 11:45 MST ------- I just noticed one more strange behaviour (kdebase-3.5.4-17 and kdelibs-3.5.4-16) which I had in mind when filing this bug, but couldn't exactly pinpoint then: When I select a program from a submenu of the "All Programs"-tab, the next time I use "All programs", I'm starting with the same submenu and not the "root KDE menu". That's basically OK, but now I don't have a button to go up one menu hierarchy again. This button will only reappear if I enter a further submenu. Hm... was that understandable? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=204742 ------- Comment #5 from dmueller@novell.com 2006-09-14 02:41 MST ------- Yes, that all application bug is already fixed. Reordering of the tabs is currently not planned afaik. the Favorite tab is the list of *your* favorites - e.g. bookmarks. you have to edit it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I'm resolving it as later, not being able to find something that can be fixed now. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
