[Bug 232097] New: garmin_gps module uses the no longer supported /proc/bus/usb/devices directory
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=232097 Summary: garmin_gps module uses the no longer supported /proc/bus/usb/devices directory Product: SUSE Linux 10.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: SuSE Linux 10.1 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: ulrich.voigt@gmx.de QAContact: qa@suse.de The garmin_gps module seems to use the /proc/bus/usb/devices directory which I think is no longer supported because of security issues of the usbdevfs filesystem. My kernel is:
uname -a Linux swe2-sp 2.6.16.27-0.6-smp #1 SMP Wed Dec 13 09:34:50 UTC 2006 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
I have installed gpsd and connected a Garmin GPS 18 and got the error "Can't open /proc/bus/usb/devices":
gpsd -N -n -D 9 /dev/ttyUSB0 gpsd: launching (Version 2.34) gpsd: listening on port gpsd gpsd: shmat(0,0,0) succeeded gpsd: shmat(0,0,0) succeeded gpsd: shmat(0,0,0) succeeded gpsd: shmat(0,0,0) succeeded gpsd: running with effective group ID 0 gpsd: running with effective user ID 0 gpsd: opening GPS data source at '/dev/ttyUSB0' gpsd: speed 9600, 8N1 gpsd: Can't open /proc/bus/usb/devices gpsd: no probe matched... gpsd: gpsd_activate(1): opened GPS (5) gpsd: select waits

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=232097 ------- Comment #3 from gregkh@novell.com 2007-01-05 11:16 MST ------- 10.1 is unsupported for things like this now that 10.2 is released. As a simple workaround, merely mount usbfs: mount -t usbfs none /proc/bus/usb/ as root to mount the filesystem (you can edit your /etc/fstab to always mount it at boot if you wish.) For the 10.2 release, this will not work, and should not be needed with the libusb change that has happened. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

It looks to me like the gpsd guys consider adding a libusb option as the path forward. At the moment, gpsd does not use libusb, and this seems to be why it fails on SuSE for this USB GPS device. Is that a fair assessment? (As additional info, the gpsd shipped with gpsdrive is much older than the current gpsd development version. However, there are some interface changes, so dropping the newer gpsd into the gpsdrive package would need to be reviewed. Some comments I read on the gpsdrive development list suggest this is partly addresses already.) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=232097 ------- Comment #11 from cobra@compuserve.com 2007-04-04 18:41 MST ------- Which kernel are you referring to? My latest update kernel is 2.6.18.8 and does not have usbfs enabled. Is there another version being pushed out to 10.2 update that has not reached the mirrors yet? Thanks. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
