This is a clone of bug 349867 - the critical problem was fixed directly in OOo,
but gnome-vfs seems to be a bit in fault as well (see bug 349867 comment 10 for
the entire info).  The most important part:

Strange thing is that GNOME_VFS_OPEN_LOCKED is not present in
/usr/include/gnome-vfs-2.0/libgnomevfs/gnome-vfs-handle.h any more (it used to
be there defined as 'GNOME_VFS_OPEN_LOCKED = 1 << 4' in the GnomeVFSOpenMode
enum).  Could you please check what happened to it?  Other than that, it [the
locking] works just fine.
