[Bug 227324] New: GRUB problems during install
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227324 Summary: GRUB problems during install Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: greg.riedesel@wwu.edu QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Hardware is an ASUS P5B-Deluxe, Intel Core2 Duo, in x86-64 mode. Previous to this installation attempt I had openSUSE 10.2 RC1 successfully installed to the unit. On attempting to install 10.2 FINAL I had major problems during the install, specifically with the GRUB portion. 1st error (from memory, I can't reproduce this one anymore. Too much troubleshooting): ----------------------- Error occured while installing GRUB. grub> setup --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 (hd0)(hd2,2) Error 23: [unrememered text] ----------------------- This was done during an "update existing installation" installation. After reattempting an install with a reformat instead and then New Installation, I'm now getting this: 2nd error: ----------------------- Error occured while installing GRUB. grub> setup --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 (hd2,2)(hd2,2) Error 21: selected disk does not exist grub> setup --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 (hd0)(hd2,2) Error 21: selected disk does not exist grub> quit ----------------------- I have three drives in my system: /dev/sda [all windows, all NTFS] /dev/sdb sdb1 [NTFS] /dev/sdc sdc1 [ext2: source files, usually mounted on /source] sdc2 [SWAP] sdc3 [ext3: ROOT] sdc4 [Extended] sdc5 [Xen partition for DomU guest] Perhaps of note, installation did NOT see the CD-Rom drive after it booted from it. Copying the installation tree to /dev/sdc1 allowed me to install. The CD-Rom is connected to a J-Micron controller. Just to repeat, this system was pretty stable with the RC1 codebase. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227324 ------- Comment #3 from greg.riedesel@wwu.edu 2006-12-10 19:32 MST ------- An additional note, when I boot from the CD and go to Repair and select "Boot OS on disk", I get about eight lines of kernel boot messages before the final line comes up. [from memory] 'udevd loaded' Where upon boot stops cold. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227324 ------- Comment #4 from greg.riedesel@wwu.edu 2006-12-11 11:55 MST ------- I've redone the install but selected LILO as a boot-loader instead. It boots; however, the kernel boot stops boot pretty early in the process. The messages on the screen lead up to... usbcore: registered new driver usbfs usbcore: registered new driver hub agpgard: Detected an Intel 965G Chipset. At that point the machine locks up hard. When I attempt to boot from the install CD, and "boot installed system", I get different behavior, the one described in comment 3. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227324 ------- Comment #5 from greg.riedesel@wwu.edu 2006-12-11 11:58 MST ------- [I should do better at keeping track of this stuff] The boot behavior I mentioned in Comment 4 also existed in the 2.6.18.2-33 kernel during the RC process. It did NOT exist in 2.6.18.2-23. I noticed this behavior last week, but didn't have the time to devote to a bug-hunt. And it stops in "agpgart" not "agpgard". oops. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I didn't know about 'agp=off'. What seems to have worked as a work-around is the following: [/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist] # Blacklisting AGPGART as it causes the 2.6.18.2-34 kernel-series to bomb on load blacklist agpgart Which functionally does the same thing as 'agp=off' if I'm understanding it right. Also, going into loadstage 3 didn't seem to affect the hang any. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227324 ------- Comment #8 from jbeulich@novell.com 2007-04-02 01:56 MST ------- Looking at the lspci output (in bug #254208) I get the understanding that intel-agp shouldn't initialize at all - there's not Intel Integrated Graphics controller. The code in intel-agp, however, blindly assumes an 845 if there's a host bridge with no matching IG (in agp_intel_probe()). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
