Summary: Issues Symbian OS 9.1 powered mobile phones Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: awafaa@opensuse.org QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: ---
ll three of my Symbian powered phones seem to have issues with openSUSE. I have one SonyEricsson M600i, one Nokia N95 and one Nokia E71; all three of them show the same issues.
When I connect the phone* to either my 11.0 or 11.1 machine I get the following in /var/log/messages:
Oct 9 10:59:27 fveult05 kernel: hub 2-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 4 Oct 9 10:59:27 fveult05 kernel: usb 3-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2 Oct 9 10:59:28 fveult05 kernel: usb 3-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice Oct 9 10:59:28 fveult05 kernel: usb 3-2: New USB device found, idVendor=0421, idProduct=00ab Oct 9 10:59:28 fveult05 kernel: usb 3-2: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0 Oct 9 10:59:28 fveult05 kernel: usb 3-2: Product: Nokia E71 Oct 9 10:59:28 fveult05 kernel: usb 3-2: Manufacturer: Nokia Oct 9 10:59:29 fveult05 kernel: cdc_acm 3-2:1.10: ttyACM0: USB ACM device Oct 9 10:59:29 fveult05 kernel: usbcore: registered new interface driver cdc_acm Oct 9 10:59:29 fveult05 kernel:drivers/usb/class/cdc-acm.c: v0.25:USB Abstract Control Model driver for USB modems and ISDN adapters Oct 9 10:59:29 fveult05 kernel: usbcore: registered new interface driver cdc_ether Oct 9 10:59:29 fveult05 kernel: usb 3-2: bad CDC descriptors Oct 9 10:59:29 fveult05 kernel: usbcore: registered new interface driver rndis_host Oct 9 10:59:29 fveult05 kernel: usb 3-2: bad CDC descriptors Oct 9 10:59:29 fveult05 kernel: usbcore: registered new interface driver rndis_wlan
If I look at dmesg it shows pretty much the same (funnily enough):
hub 2-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 4 usb 3-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2 usb 3-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice usb 3-2: New USB device found, idVendor=0421, idProduct=00ab usb 3-2: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0 usb 3-2: Product: Nokia E71 usb 3-2: Manufacturer: Nokia cdc_acm 3-2:1.10: ttyACM0: USB ACM device usbcore: registered new interface driver cdc_acm drivers/usb/class/cdc-acm.c: v0.25:USB Abstract Control Model driver for USB modems and ISDN adapters usbcore: registered new interface driver cdc_ether usb 3-2: bad CDC descriptors usbcore: registered new interface driver rndis_host usb 3-2: bad CDC descriptors usbcore: registered new interface driver rndis_wlan
The issue with this is that I am unable to use my phone as a USB modem in conjunction with NetworkManager, either in KDE or GNOME. Is there anything that can be done, and is it worth filing a bug? As Nokia use Symbian pretty much exclusively to power their handsets and they have 40% of the market globally I personally would like to see us support their use :)
I think this could well be an upstream issue as I tried to connect the phones to a ForesightLinux machine with pretty much the same issues.
*These were taken from connecting my E71, but the output is almost identical with the others.
If the phones are used in the "Mass Storage" mode, then there are no issues and I can browse the phones as if they were USB keys.

But as this is still a bug, presumably with NetworkManager, I cannot simply close it. It has to be reassigned to the network people.

--- Comment #31 from Tambet Ingo tambet@novell.com 2009-02-19 03:43:33 MST --- ModemManager can not parse one of the responses to an AT command. In order to see which exact command and what the response is, please try the following:
# Become root su - # kill NetworkManager and modem-manager killall NetworkManager killall modem-manager # Run modem-manager with debugging enabled /usr/sbin/modem-manager --debug # Open a new terminal, become root and run NetworkManager su - /usr/sbin/NetworkManager
and then try to activate the modem again. I'd like to see all the output from modem-manager process.
