[Bug 738738] New: KDE Software Updates (kpk_update) has Huge Fundamental Problems
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=738738 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=738738#c0 Summary: KDE Software Updates (kpk_update) has Huge Fundamental Problems Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Factory Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.4 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE4 Applications AssignedTo: kde-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: scott@aphofis.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=469076) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=469076) 1 of 3 User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:9.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/9.0 Whilst this bug is being raised in 11.4, I have the firm belief that the same fundamental problems exist, or get worse, in 12.1 - Close bug if this is NOT the case. Using a default KDE installation the new KDE software Update Module (kpk_update) is installed. Its launch Icon can be found by searching the default menu for the words 'software update' - see image.001.jpg Firstly when the application is launched there is a default search for updates. The windows properties such as Help, Defaults and Reset are not functional as their is no ability to customise any user preference what-so-ever. Whilst new updates are being located the window in focus is of a dialogue box nature, meaning there is no access to the subordinate window. This runs contrary to every aspect of KDE Windowing Nature. When items are found for updates the user can select 1 or all without error. After selection the window requesting escalation to root in both not in focus and can only be found minimised in the task manager. Unless you have a keen eye to notice this window nothing will work. Once the minimised window is put into focus the escalation to root is available however the use of the 'only for this session' selection option is actually applied to its non use. In other words both options for remembering escalation password to cover or not cover a session, are ignored. This is easily found to be true by executing the application again. If there is any error in downloading a required module there is not ability to retry. There is NO possible way of moving the icon object for 'software updates' or copying the icon or right click add to desktop or add to panel that works. There is no ability to store preferences as far a frequency of auto check or indeed ANY option from the main window in image 003.jpeg hence the buttons Help, Defaults and Reset have no function what-so-ever. When the same default window is open there is an icon in the system tray, however changing the properties of this icon to be always present and not hide, are useless as the application disappears after completion on its job. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that there is no ability to time initiate or store ANY user preferences for this module as it cannot reside in the system tray. Generally speaking it looks like this module was hastily created without the very basics of testing and does not even conform to the KDE Windowing procedure standard interface, however if the user finds the window to escalate to root, the application does work. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.100% reproducible in 11.4 and presumably in 12.1 or there, the problems may be worse or greater 2. 3. Actual Results: This is appalling software development - sorry - I just call it as I see it - If resources are devoted to create this new module, having to mop up huge errors in its original design; benefits no one and just wastes time.! Expected Results: It conforms to KDE Windowing standards Dont bother closing this as bug as upstream - The product is openSUSE and this bug will auto create the same in KDE's bugzilla -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

As you have already written these are (if at all) upstream bugs. And please only one bug per report.
In generall apper (the replacment of kpackagekit) in 12.2 seems to be usable.
There is no need/value to implement bugs with the default install patterns up-line..bugs in opensuse create auto upline bugs in KDE...Bugzilla... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
