[Bug 529368] New: totem video player wrong translation
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=529368 Summary: totem video player wrong translation Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Milestone 5 Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Minor Priority: P5 - None Component: Translations AssignedTo: ke@novell.com ReportedBy: robert@re-factory.de QAContact: ke@novell.com Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; de; rv:1.9.0.12) Gecko/2009071200 SUSE/3.0.12-0.1.2 Firefox/3.0.12 In 11.2M5 Gnome LiveCD in the applications menu, the totem video player is incorrectly translated to German as "talisman". This might make sense from a linguistic point of view - but better do not start to translate software names. After all OpenOffice is not called Offenes Büro in German - right? ;) Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Boot into 11.2M5 using German language settings. 2. Open the computer menu and click on more applications 3. Observe that the video player is called "talisman" instead of "totem". -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

having the full path is a lot of duplicated stuff that is really the same stuff. I could solve this in a nicer way in matching the filename against prefixes. E.g. I created good results in prefixing yast stuff with Y- and KDE3 stuff with K3- and applications with Y-.
But this algorithm would have to end everywhere where we use desktop_translations, GNOME, KDE and yast come into my mind - and everytime a new problem comes up we would have to adapt it.
What about removing /usr/share/applications and /etc/xdg/autostart from the full path if they're prefixing the path, and using the remaining part of the path? This means we would have totem.desktop and /usr/share/kde4/apps/kmahjongg/layouts/totem.desktop, so no conflict there.
We could solve the problem at hand in a simpler way: prefering applications menu over everything else. No idea if it would be good enough for the rest though.
I'm afraid we might get a similar bug if we prefer applications. For example, /usr/share/kde4/apps/kmahjongg/layouts/totem.desktop is certainly useful somewhere. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

How is KDE going to look up the translation for /usr/share/kde4/apps/kmahjongg/layouts/totem.desktop if it's hidden as 17-totem.desktop?
It could know that 17- is that path (hardcoded list somewhere, maybe, even the desktop translations catalogue could provide the list as internal values), and it knows what path the .desktop file is in when translating it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
