Neither Firefox (which was opened while the sound still works) nor Amarok nor VLC are able to produce sound. Executing `/etc/init.d/alsasound restart` makes the sound work again. I've attached the segment of my /var/log/messages between restarting alsa and noticing that the sound had died. Kevin, what do you mean by non-pulseaudio apps? It's my understanding that all PA-friendly apps fall back to other sound systems if PA isn't available. "Non-pulseaudio" is my made-up name for apps that don't seem to do that. Thanks for the pointer to disabling pulseaudio, I'll have to try that. If I were you, I would check and make sure something hasn't restarted pulseaudio for you. It seems to automatically spawn PA. Another frequent problem is libflashsupport.
