Well, I'm not sure this is really a fatal error for X. It doesn't look like that. Could you please try the following?
Terminate gdm by e.g. running 'rcxdm' as user 'root' or boot into runlevel 3. Then login to Linux console as regular user and run
X -retro & sleep 3 DISPLAY=:0.0 icewm &
Does Xserver and then icewm on top of it start?

Sorry. This has been just a stupid idea by myself. I'll give it a try next week. For now I believe you can switch to xdm with 'update-alternatives --config default-displaymanager' and select xdm instead of gdm.

It even occurs with nouveau driver when using gdm before installing any 3rd party NVIDIA driver.
