I copied the x86_64 DVD iso using imagewriter to a 16GB USB stick and tried to boot from it. It did boot until preparing udev, after the system hangs.
My suggestion is, if the above is not a bug, to make it possible to boot the DVD image from a USB-stick and do the installation from this stick.
Maybe it is needed to have USB-stick present under the F4 key on the boot menu when booting from the USB-stick.

Clicked on it and it asked me for the root password. After that I provided the path to the iso file and it found the USB stick to write to. If I need to do more please tell me how. I can't find a utility isohybrid. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Near the bottom of the page are these instructions. " Linux instructions Install syslinux/isohybrid If you would like to boot the from a USB stick then you can make the ISO bootable by installing syslinux. # zypper in syslinux # isohybrid openSUSE-11.4-DVD-x86_64.iso Once completed just follow whichever set of above LiveUSB instructions you like, and take care to read the Booting from USB-DVD section below afterward. " " Booting from USB-DVD Write the image to the USB stick using the Windows instructions above. Hit F4, change the installation source to Hard Drive, but leave all fields blank and hit Enter to close the dialog. Type "namescheme=by-label" into the boot options for "Installation" and start the installation; you should go straight to the installer without a hitch. So my suggestion still remains, make this possible for the DVD also, without these steps. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Booting from USB-DVD
Write the image to the USB stick using the Windows instructions above.
Hit F4, change the installation source to Hard Drive, but leave all fields blank and hit Enter to close the dialog. Type "namescheme=by-label" into the boot options for "Installation" and start the installation; you should go straight to the installer without a hitch. "
I skip this part. Seems OK. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I did write DVD 64bit to a 16GB USB stick using imagewriter not isohybrid. I could boot the stick but it hangs after the message: Starting udev... However entering namescheme=by-label makes the USB stick continue booting. Because I do not use ms windows I skip all instructions from: http://en.opensuse.org/Live_USB_stick pertaining to ms W. 1. download whatever ISO DVD or live or network I wish to try out and pretend to test from http://software.opensuse.org/ or from http://download.opensuse.org/factory/iso/ 2. This step is not necessary for LiveCDs. http://en.opensuse.org/Live_USB_stick states: "You'll need to look at the USB DVD section below if you don't want to install from a LiveCD image." if necessary # zypper in syslinux # isohybrid Downloads/openSUSE-NET-x86_64-Build0381-Media.iso 3. then I open imagewriter and write the image to USB. May want to verify that the USB is boot-able. # fdisk /dev/sdc then p will show: Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdc1 * 0 532479 266240 17 Hidden HPFS/NTFS -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

On my desktop I have a USB port that I used to write the image on the stick, however I can't use it to boot. I have to use a port on the back to boot from it. I have USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports, but I don't know which is which. Maybe this is the cause.
