[Bug 780104] New: cpufreq-selector missing from gnome-applets
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=780104 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=780104#c0 Summary: cpufreq-selector missing from gnome-applets Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.2 Version: Final Platform: All OS/Version: openSUSE 12.2 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: GNOME AssignedTo: bnc-team-gnome@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: atz3@yahoo.ca QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/535.22+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Chromium/17.0.963.56 Chrome/17.0.963.56 Safari/535.22+ SUSE/12.2 (3.4.2) Epiphany/3.4.2 I checked the latest build I could find which appears to be gnome-applets-3.5.1 and I found it here, linking the spec: https://build.opensuse.org/package/view_file?file=gnome-applets.spec&package=gnome-applets&project=GNOME%3ANext&rev=745ce2396861a2c74f7ff8af3d06b2f4 I havent looked for a newer build for suse, but comparing the changes with what *seems* to be the same version from fedoras builds which I found here: http://rpmfind.net//linux/RPM/fedora/devel/rawhide/x86_64/g/gnome-applets-3.... It is clear that cpufreq-selector is missing or has been removed for some reason. I've searched around but to no avail, I know there are other methods that can be used to set the governor like cpufreq-set from the cpufreq-utils package, but there are other functions of cpufreq-selector which are desired such as the modal prompt for root password. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install openSuse 12.2 Gnome 3.4 2. Install gnome-applets if it isn't installed already 3. Open terminal and run cpufreq-selector Actual Results: cpufreq-selector can not be found Expected Results: cpufreq-selector should be present in package gnome-applets -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

From Changelog:
* to. mai 28 2009 vuntz@novell.com - Pass --disable-frequency-selector to configure: we don't want to have a frequency selector, since we prefer to let the kernel do the right thing. --- -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=780104 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=780104#c2 --- Comment #2 from C Rob <atz3@yahoo.ca> 2012-09-12 22:45:15 UTC --- Well, since the kernel does not seem to do the right thing in certain use cases, perhaps it would be better to address that bug. But, does the above mean that suse is the only distro rolling around with this change applied? If that is the case, perhaps it would be possible to just reimpliment that specific gnome-applet for suse?? As for a use case where the kernel doesn't set the appropriate freq, one example is: User launches media player to watch movie, it uses 100% cpu @ the lowest freq and the freq jumps to the highest, it then stays at the highest freq for a few minutes and reverts back to the lowest. In reality it seems logical that it should stay at the highest freq, as when it goes back to the lowest it remains there for most of the time. My casual solution to that problem, since it causes movies to lag, is to use cpufreq-set from the cpufreq-utils package to set the governor. If the above is true perhaps cpufreq-utils should have also been disabled. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=780104 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=780104#c3 --- Comment #3 from Vincent Untz <vuntz@suse.com> 2012-09-13 06:26:49 UTC --- I think there were two reasons for disabling this applet: a) it was installed with a suid bit. It's now possible to use polkit, though. b) I'm nearly sure the kernel people recommend to let the kernel do its job. Might be worth filing a bug for your use case. Anyway, I wouldn't be opposed to re-enabling the applet if built with polkit instead of the suid bit. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If the package is intended [ 250s] for inclusion in any SUSE product please open a bug report to request review [ 250s] of the service by the security team. So before this can fly out, we'll need to get a security review on top of this. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
