[Bug 377449] New: Create addition to scrub (Secure Delete) HDD devices with the Hardware Catagory of Yast OR from Install Media Menu .
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=377449 Summary: Create addition to scrub (Secure Delete) HDD devices with the Hardware Catagory of Yast OR from Install Media Menu. Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: PC OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: Usability AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: alpha096@virginbroadband.com.au QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Customer It is taken for a given that it is almost impossible to scrub a HDD so that it cannot be reconstructed. Suggest Addition of a Secure Erase tool in Yast. I am hesitant as suggest its placement in Yast and could be easily transferred to the Install Menu From Source CD/DVD which I tend to lean against more. I suggested Yast only as it requires root access and needs to be kept secure from users, however putting this option on an Installation CD/DVD Media might achieve a better security and a more easily constructed secure erase app. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It does not belong to installation media menu. If you need to securely delete a data or file, why don't you just call several times dd if=/dev/random of=/device/you/want/to/erase or (even easier) use tools which are available for secure deleting of files (e.g. shred, which is part of the distro)? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Our .MIL and .GOV users, I suggest, would greatly enjoy the ability to scrub a HDD NOT a partition as this is part of retiring and old piece of Hardware or re-assign it to a different user. Currently our friends just insert a CD and activate a separate program to scrub a HDD. It mean they have to carry it around in their hand to perform. I just thought this was so simple and we could provide this in Yast under the Misc category. It was intended to be a convenient tool that any industry could use that requires data security - and thats a big audience/user base. I thought it would be so very simple to add this to Yast/Misc catagory. Please re-consider - re-open to default -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

To Permit secure delete of device irrespective of encrypted partition on a device or any other read only device so specified in 0 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I am totally fine about your need to balance manpower over more serious issues - I coll with that I am sorry we cannot leave this as open for a later point in time when you are not this frantic with so many bugs.
