[Bug 876621] New: domU networking: plasmoid NM applet works fine when run as root, but refuses to do so when run as unprivileged user
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=876621 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=876621#c0 Summary: domU networking: plasmoid NM applet works fine when run as root, but refuses to do so when run as unprivileged user Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 13.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 13.1 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: olafmartens@web.de QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:29.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/29.0 First of all, NetworkManager itself recognizes any of the virtual network devices present within the domU in question (the one that's my main workspace) and thus handles all connections the way it is supposed to (otherwise neither XDMCP nor SSH to it would be possible). However, when I attempt to fire up the control applet (from the package plasmoid-networkmanagement) as a regular user, it cannot attach to the NetworkManager for some reason (restarting the network has it recognize the NetworkManager running, but none of the two emulated wired networks are discovered by the applet). Logging in as root to the domU, however, causes the applet to instantaneously comnnect to Networkmanager and allows me to handle both network connections without any problems. Logging in again as an unprivileged user again shows the same problems as before logging in as root. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. (optional) Create a Linux domU (in case none is available at first) 2. Switch networking inside the domU to NetworkManager 3. Attempt to use the Plasmoid network manager applet as regular user Actual Results: The applet complains: "The program NetworkManager is not running. Please start it." Expected Results: Display any connections present and allow their maintenance (as is happening for the user root). Installed packages of NetworkManager: NetworkManager-strongswan-1.3.0-11.1.4.x86_64 NetworkManager-kde4-libs-0.9.0.10-2.8.1.x86_64 typelib-1_0-NetworkManager-1_0-0.9.8.8-1.1.x86_64 libproxy1-networkmanager-0.4.11-9.1.1.x86_64 NetworkManager-lang-0.9.8.8-1.1.noarch NetworkManager-strongswan-lang-1.3.0-11.1.4.noarch NetworkManager-0.9.8.8-1.1.x86_64 plasmoid-networkmanagement-0.9.0.10-2.8.1.x86_64 NetworkManager-strongswan-kde4-0.9.0.10-2.8.1.x86_64 libNetworkManagerQt0-0.9.8.0-4.1.x86_64 I require NetworkManager for handling IPsec connections to remote machines, because it provides the means necessary of handling them without much of a hassle. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Something must have changed in Factory that made things work just fine - would a backport of these changes to 13.1 be possible? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=876621 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=876621#c2 --- Comment #2 from Olaf Martens <olafmartens@web.de> 2014-08-06 12:58:44 UTC --- Please discard my previous comment (from 2014-08-06 11:42:40 UTC) - by coincidence I managed to pinpoint logging in via XDMCP as the actual issue (which is independent of the OS version). When logging in via remote console (e. g. VNC) everything runs fine, ditto when logging in via XDMCP as root. The only problem arises when attempting to log in via XDMCP as an unprivileged user. In that case the applet doesn't recognize the main process and claims that it wouldn't be running. Restarting the network while still logged in causes the applet to subsequently discover the main process, but it still cannot handle any connections. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
