[Bug 851063] New: phonon-backend-vlc's requirement on vlc-noX is too strict
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=851063 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=851063#c0 Summary: phonon-backend-vlc's requirement on vlc-noX is too strict Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 13.1 Version: Final Platform: All OS/Version: openSUSE 13.1 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE4 Workspace AssignedTo: kde-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: wbauer@tmo.at QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux) KHTML/4.11.3 (like Gecko) Konqueror/4.11 SUSE 13.1's phonon-backend-vlc requires vlc-noX = 2.1.0. But VLC got updated to 2.1.1 yesterday, both in Packman and in the VideoLAN repos. So it's impossible now to use phonon-backend-vlc with VLC from those repos to get full multimedia support because of dependency conflicts. You have to stay with the included VLC version 2.1.0 and can't even play mp3s. Personally I updated to vlc 2.1.1 by telling YaST to ignore the conflict, and everything still works fine. So I think this dependency should just be relaxed, it doesn't seem to be necessary to require the exact version. Two options, none of which is 100% optimal. a) Require >= vlc-noX (since, unfortunately, vlc backend links also to vlccore, and not only to libvlc, this could easily break with newer vlc versions, and i'm not too familiar with vlc's release cycle, etc) b) build vlc backend in Packman also (not a solution for vlc repo users) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

a) Require >= vlc-noX (since, unfortunately, vlc backend links also to vlccore, and not only to libvlc, this could easily break with newer vlc versions, and i'm not too familiar with vlc's release cycle, etc) It also requires libvlc.so.5 and libvlccore.so.7 anyway. If there's an incompatible change in a newer VLC version, the soname should change, no?
And the vlc-noX-2.1.1 package has a strict requirement on libvlc5 = 2.1.1 and libvlccore7 = 2.1.1, so you can't mix those packages between different versions either. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

That's true. But i meant more about potential issues with newer libVLC and vlccore. Anyway, submitted the package with relaxed deps, will see how that goes. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
