Could you try to install kernel-vanilla and check whether the problem exists on it? - Install kernel-vanilla.rpm once via rpm -i. rpm -ivh kernel-vanilla.rpm - After reboot, you'll have multiple kernel entries in the boot menu - Boot from vanilla kernel - Try to play back on this kernel for testing. The point of the procedure in comment #26 is that you get a really clean setup without pulseaudio or any mixer application. So, reboot to runlevel 3. Login without graphic, and try aplay. At this state, you should be able to run aplay without pulseaudio.
