Trying to send a file from Phone (Sony Ericsson ELM) to Notebook (FSC Amilo Si1520) fails, as Notebook is not visible to phone (no devices found)
Notebook can be visible but the OBEX profile may not be available. How does the output of [1] in your box look like ? Try and enable the "BT share/receive ..." in Gnome "Control center" -> System -> "Personal file sharing" . After that "ps" check if the obex-data-server is running. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Programmer <casualprogrammer@opensuse.org> 2011-03-02 09:26:42 UTC --- That appears to work. The procedure is quite unusual and by no means self-explanatory. I (and others probably too) would expect the request to be signalled to the notebook, which in turn should pop up a message indicating that bluetooth device wants to transmit a file, do I want to accept or reject. Furthermore settings related to Bluetooth should be accesible from the bluetooth applet rather than from "gnome -control-center/system/personal file sharing". Rather odd, don't you think ? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I (and others probably too) would expect the request to be signalled to the notebook, which in turn should pop up a message indicating that bluetooth device wants to transmit a file, do I want to accept or reject.
But that's how bluetooth works... We don't want to enable by default file sharing for security reasons.

Here, if I click on the bluetooth preferences, I have a nice "Receive files" button at the bottom of the dialog. Don't you have that? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Programmer <casualprogrammer@opensuse.org> 2011-03-02 10:47:29 UTC --- Well, Vincent, blush!!! yes, I have the "Receive Files" button too :-( Contrary to my general curiosity I did not venture to click it, as I misinterpreted it as actively inducing a file transfer. Maybe it should be rechristened to something more obvious, like "File Transfer Options" or so. As for "that's how bluetooth works" I am not with you. Making the notebook "visible" should at least make it visible _and_ list potentially available services, no matter wether file sharing is enabled or not. But that's just my Windows spoiled view :-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

That'd make the buttons way too big, and that's a change that won't happen in openSUSE now anyway, as the UI changed completely for GNOME 3.
As for "that's how bluetooth works" I am not with you. Making the notebook "visible" should at least make it visible _and_ list potentially available services, no matter wether file sharing is enabled or not.
But listing a service that will not work (because file sharing is disabled) doesn't make sense since... it will not work :-) It seems to me that you're asking for file sharing to be enabled by default. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Programmer <casualprogrammer@opensuse.org> 2011-03-02 11:31:07 UTC --- As I said, I am a Windows spoiled guy and expect ease of use and self explanatory descriptions from my gadgets. If I buy a bluetooth device, I can question it to find out what services it offers, without being able to use the services without authentification. I think that is neither harmful nor unusual. I will close this exchange of thoughts by citing Robert Metcalfe, Inventor of the Ethernet, whom I had the luck to meet once: "IT has to be as simple as switching on the light!" Thanks for your time anyway, Vincent, I appreciate it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in openSUSE since the time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test it on a current, supported openSUSE version. When you test it and it is still an issue, kindly reopen this bug and move it to the tested version of openSUSE. Truly yours. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
