I get (often) continuous high fan speed already at logging in to Gnome on openSUSE 11.3 x86_64 Tumbleweed, hp8710w mobile workstation hardware ~> uname -a Linux linux-sca0.site 2.6.34.7-0.7-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2010-12-13 11:13:53 +0100 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
A work-around that help to stop the fan is to logout and login again.
This problem doesn't occure (at least not usual) on openSUSE 11.4, currently RC1
Tumbleweed has currently the same kernel as 11.4 (2.6.37), so this should not be an issue for you, right? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Thank you for notifying me. Due to a dependency conflict the desktop kernel had not been upgraded to the current tumbleweed version. I've solved this and so far, the fan speed has behaved normally ~> uname -a Linux linux-sca0.site 2.6.37-12-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2011-02-10 21:27:27 +0100 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Just a guess, but it could be related to graphics power consumption. Do you use a binary driver for the one and the kernel graphics driver or framebuffer for the other setup?
Currently I'm using the 'nouveau' driver for my FX 3600M on both 11.3 and 11.4, though I've also used Nvidia's driver on 11.3. I expect also to switch to the latter when it becomes ready for 11.4.
Also try top, maybe you see a process looping around at 100%, this would heat up the CPU rather quickly.
I'm aware about the indexing load which happends. But in this case the fan speed ran fast also without any process cpu load. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
