[Bug 857133] New: hplip in opensuse 13.1 breaks network scanning via saned
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=857133 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=857133#c0 Summary: hplip in opensuse 13.1 breaks network scanning via saned Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 13.1 Version: Final Platform: x86 OS/Version: openSUSE 13.1 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: moby@pcsn.net QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:27.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/27.0 The version of hplip installed with opensuse 13.1 breaks network scanning. Local scanning works fine. Running saned -d8000 on the server and doing a scaminage -T from a client shows the following: On Client: ========== scanimage -d net:<saned server ip> -T scanimage: open of device net:<saned server ip> failed: Invalid argument On Server: ========== [saned] init: access granted [saned] init: access granted to <client user name>@<client ip> [saned] process_request: waiting for request [saned] process_request: got request 2 [saned] process_request: (open) strlen(resource) == 0 [saned] process_request: (open) device_list[0] == 0 [saned] process_request: waiting for request [saned] process_request: got request 10 [saned] bailing out, waiting for children... [saned] bail_out: all children exited scanimage -L on server shows: scanimage -L device `hpaio:/net/HP_LaserJet_3055?zc=hp2' is a Hewlett-Packard HP_LaserJet_3055 all-in-one Package versions are: hplip-hpijs-3.13.10-1.1.i586 hplip-sane-3.13.10-1.1.i586 hplip-3.13.10-1.1.i586 Above setup used to work fine when server was running opensuse 12.3 (of course the rpm packages were different versions) and client was opensuse 13.1. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Install and configure saned with hp all in one scanner 2.Attempt to scan from client 3. Actual Results: Messages posted in description. Expected Results: List of devices available should have been provided. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

For details see http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:CUPS_and_SANE_Firewall_settings Because in openSUSE 12.3 and 13.1 we provide the same sane-backends version 1.0.23 I do not assume it is an issue in the SANE software. If you do not run a firewall, it could be an issue in the HPLIP software itself. We (i.e. openSUSE) distribute the HPLIP software as is but we do not develop it. Please contact HPLIP directly via http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/support.html when threre are issues with HP's HPLIP software that are not caused by openSUSE, see "UPSTREAM" at https://bugzilla.novell.com/page.cgi?id=fields.html#status If you like to do some more debugging what the actual root cause could be on tze server and on the client you may have a look at "Trouble-Shooting (Debugging)" at http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Configuring_Scanners Furthermore the HPLIP software usually logs into /var/log/messages FYI: Regarding the newest HPLIP version for openSUSE: I provide HPLIP 3.13.11 as RPM packages "hplip", "hplip-hpijs", and "hplip-sane" for various openSUSE and Suse Linux Enterprise versions in the "Printing" development project in the openSUSE build service for 32-bit i586 and 64-bit x86_64 architecture. E.g. for openSUSE 13.1 32-bit i586 from this direct URL http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Printing/openSUSE_13.1/i586/ Please read https://build.opensuse.org/project/show?project=Printing in particular note therein: ======================================== The "Printing" project may contain new, upcoming software. Therefore the packages in the "Printing" project might neither be in a stable state nor fit well into currently installed systems. Have this in mind if you think about to install packages from the "Printing" project into your currently running system. Do not use "Factory" if your system is not "Factory". Use the matching packages for your particular system. The packages in the "Printing" project are only for testing, without any guarantee or warranty, and without any support. As an extreme example, this means if your complete computer center crashes because of those packages, it is only your problem. On the other hand this does not mean that those packages are known to be terrible broken but they are not thoroughly tested so that any unexpected issue can happen. ======================================== For general information see http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:How_to_set-up_a_HP_printer I assume you are a venturous openSUSE user who likes to try out if the openSUSE HPLIP 3.13.11 RPM packages "hplip", "hplip-hpijs", and "hplip-sane" work for you. In this case please report whether or not it works for you (you can add comments to this bug regardless that it is closed as "upstream" - i.e. there is no need to reopen it only to provide feedback). Many thanks in advance for testing it and for your feedback! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I have ruled out the firewall etc. I have also ruled out the client side, since the same client hitting an oss 12.3 box with the older version of hplip etc works just fine. I suppose I am venturous to some extent - I ran into this since I was sharing a scanner with multiple machines via saned and it worked fine with oss 12X ... after upgrading to oss 13.1, I ran into this bug and tried all available hplip rpm, including this latest one. Apparently non of the available hplip packages work with saned network scanning on oss 13.1. Use the matching packages for your particular system. The packages in development projects or user home projects are only for testing, without any guarantee or warranty, and without any support. As an extreme example, this means if your complete computer center crashes because of those packages, it is only your problem. On the other hand this does not mean that those packages are known to be terrible broken but they are not thoroughly tested so that any unexpected issue can happen. Actually sane-backends version 1.0.24 works already well for some other "venturous openSUSE users", see https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=851720#c3 and https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=851543#c9 When it does not work with HPLIP 3.13.11 and sane-backends 1.0.24 you should report the issue directly at HPLIP upstream via http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/support.html and preferably post an URL to your upstream issue report here as reference. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I filed a bugreport upstream at the url you indicate.
