Rainer, would be nice if you could test this xdm update together with the current xinit update. ;-)
yes, i am doing this since today 13:40 :-) i installed xdm-1.1.12-297.1 and xinit-1.4.1-76.1 and changed back file /usr/lib/sddm/sddm.conf.d/00-general.conf this works again. but now i see that there is in the meantime xdm-1.1.12-298.1 and xinit-1.4.1-77.1 i will update and report back. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

but now i see that there is in the meantime xdm-1.1.12-298.1 and xinit-1.4.1-77.1
i will update and report back.
it works, because the files, which are referenced by /usr/lib/sddm/sddm.conf.d/00-general.conf are in place (/etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup, /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession) because xdm does not use /usr/etc. but xinit now again uses /usr/etc/X11/xinit but the files from: systemd (/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/50-systemd-user.sh) libcanberra-gtk-module-common ( /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/libcanberra-gtk-module.sh) xdg-user-dirs (/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/xdg-user-dirs.sh) are still placed in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d does the new xinit search for files in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d as well as in /usr/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d? because i manually copied the above files from /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d to /usr/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d and i want to know if i can revert that. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

it works, because the files, which are referenced by /usr/lib/sddm/sddm.conf.d/00-general.conf are in place (/etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup, /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession) because xdm does not use /usr/etc.
Yes, that's correct. I only added changes to xdm, which were needed for the xinit update.
but xinit now again uses /usr/etc/X11/xinit ...
Yes, that's correct.
but the files from: systemd (/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/50-systemd-user.sh) libcanberra-gtk-module-common ( /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/libcanberra-gtk-module.sh) xdg-user-dirs (/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/xdg-user-dirs.sh)
are still placed in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d
does the new xinit search for files in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d as well as in /usr/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d?
Exactly! :-)
because i manually copied the above files from /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d to /usr/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d and i want to know if i can revert that.
Please go ahead with this. It should work. Otherwise I need to fix the new code. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

works great! :-D cool. the result is now, that everything works, as before, and no changing or copying files is needed. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Ok. I had another try in X11:XOrg/xdm tonight

- reenabled move to /usr/etc/X11/xdm; updated xdm-tarball.patch (includes changes from xinit-UsrEtcMove.patch) [boo#1176212]
Displaymanagers are starting (apart from gdm; probably Mesa/OpenGL problem in the VM; I didn't investigate yet). I tried xdm, sddm, and lightdm. But I couldn't start a Xsession, no matter which displaymanger I was using. Nothing useful in ~/.xsession-errors.
so, currently it is not working? if it works in your test-environment, i could test. but if you already know, that it doesn't work, i will not try. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I worked on fixes so you can use xdm, lightdm and sddm to start icewm and xfce desktops at least. You can also start Plasma5, but once I click on the geeko on the left bottom desktop freezes. Don't know what happens there. Maybe that's related to 3D support in qemu. gdm and GNOME doesn't work. Most likely due to the 3D support issues within qemu.
Which displaymanager and desktop are you usually using? Then I could continue working on these first.
i am using KDE with proprietary nvidia driver. so i use sddm and plasma5. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

- fixes in xdm-tarball.patch * display-manager: also symlink Xstartup and Xreset in /etc/X11/xdm (needed by lighdm)
i tried this version. sadly, it does not work for me. neither after install, nor at X start populated the /etc/X11/xdm folder with copies or links to the files from /usr/etc/X11/xdm, so the sddm config file /usr/lib/sddm/sddm.conf.d/00-general.conf which has references to /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession and /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup failed, and i could not login. i reverted back to the xdm version from tumbleweed. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

ok. but wouldn't the workaround with changing file /usr/lib/sddm/sddm.conf.d/00-general.conf be simpler/faster? or is your workaround better, because it will work with both xdm versions, the old (which places files in /etc/X11/xdm) and the new (which places files in /usr/etc/X11/xdm)?
