[Bug 736077] New: Cooling Fan doesn't operate
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=736077 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=736077#c0 Summary: Cooling Fan doesn't operate Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: munguanaweza@netzero.net QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:8.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/8.0 Hi, I am not able to get the cooling fan working on my Toshiba laptop U505-S2950 with opensuse 12.1 and KDE. I have had this bug repeatedly in opensuse 11.2, 11.3, and 11.4 with the kernels supplied in the standard opensuse distribution. I delayed upgrading from 11.1 till I found that I could get the fan working in 11.4 with the kernel supplied from http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/HEAD/openSUSE_11.4/ I upgraded my operating system with a format of / and /home and clean installation of opensuse 12.1. However, with the 3.x kernel supplied on the iso I downloaded (opensuse 12.1 i86x64) on 12-6-2011 the cooling fan didn't work. I was going to try and install the latest kernel from the Kernel:/Head repository to see if that would get the fan working. But there isn't a repository for Kernel:/HEAD/openSUSE_12.1 yet, so I didn't get to try it. Since the fan wasn't working at all I really couldn't use 12.1, so I formatted and reinstalled 11.4. Again, I wasn't able to get the fan working in 11.4 until I installed kernel-default kernel-devel and kernel-source 3.1.4-1.1x86-64 from opensuse build service, since there wasn't a kernel in the HEAD repository at the moment. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install openSUSE 12.1 2. 3. Actual Results: Cooling fan doesn't operate at all. Expected Results: The cooling fan should have maintained the temperature of the cpu at about 50 degrees C , as read from acpi -t -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I was able to get my cooling fan to work properly on opensuse 11.4 working by installing a kernel from the http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/stable/standard/ repository. I have found that this problem is not totally resolved by installing an updated kernel for 12.1, as I have done to get my fan working with openSUSE 11.4. I have installed kernel 3.2.6 from opensuse stable standard repository on both 11.4 and 12.1. On 11.4 after installing the 3.2.6-1.1 kernel, the cooling fan reliably comes on at about 50 degrees C cpu temperature, and stays on to cool the laptop. If it does shut off, it will come back on when the cpu temperature rises above 50 degrees C. However, the fan will never come on at any time with the 2.6.x kernels. After installing the same exact 3.2.6 kernel on 12.1, sometimes the fan will come on at around 50 degrees C, but most likely it won't come on till about 65 degrees C. But, then it doesn't even do that all the time and sometimes it won't come on at all. If it does come on, it cools the laptop to somewhere below 50 degrees, then shuts off, never to come on again. I have tried several kernels from this repository and they all act the same way. I have had this problem on the laptop since version 11.2, and it has been given little attention to resolve the problem even though I have introduced it as a bug in each successive version of openSuse. I have to rely on the help of those more knowledgeable if this is ever to be resolved. I hope that someone at Novell will take a personal interest to see it resolved. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Can you make sure that "acpi -t" could exactly make fan turning ? If this is true then it's expected that something wrong in firmware because the acpi thermal zone temperature got cured via method call (_TMP) ? This is basally wild guess, no any code review/experience could provide that .. Better you could provide acpi dump for further analysis .. $ acpidump > acpidump.hex And provide acpi thermal zone information for working/no-working : $ grep "" /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone[0-9]/* $ grep "" /sys/class/thermal/cooling_device[0-9]/* The most we interested is what trip point temperature for "active" (ie turning fan) cooling type. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

From your provided result all cooling fans are supposed to be turning at 66 (kernel 3.2.10 ) and 72 (kernel 3.3.3) degree C. By fact of examining these values ..
/sys/class/thermal/cooling_device[0-9]/type is "fan" and /sys/class/thermal/cooling_device[0-9]/sys/class/thermal/cooling_device[0-9]/cur_state is "1". My idea is basically like this If there's any fan not turning .. there seems to be wrong in firmware(as it reports turning but actually not ..). If all fans did work, try to reproduce your problem and find any corresponding cooling_device node (/sys/class/thermal/cooling_device?) that cur_state is "0" and type is "fan" and see what temperature in trip_point it was associated with (the output of comment #14 would be helpful to identify it). In theory, the thermal_zone?/temp should be lower than that trip_point temperature. If you interested in explaining the thermal sysfs it's in the kernel documentation. http://www.mjmwired.net/kernel/Documentation/thermal/sysfs-api.txt Thanks. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I had a look around inside of these files, and didn't really find anything useful. I will have a look at the link to kernel documentation that you provided to see what I can learn from it. As far as the fans, there is only one cooling fan on the laptop. It runs at at least two speeds, high or low but maybe more, depending on temperature output inside the laptop. The problem was with earlier kernels that it doesn't start the fan up at all, later ones are sort of hit or miss at high temperatures. I think that I may have been providing the last few replies for bash command results from 11.4, where the fan works with these 3.2.10 and 3.3.x kernels. I will repeat the commands with 12.1 and post them here for you to look over and compare the results. Maybe something obvious will stand out. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Grepping the kernel source code I found toshiba has it own platform driver that provides means through procfs to control the fan, and userspace acpitool seems to be able to leverage it to control it. If so then the focus of this problem should put from thermal zone to this platform driver and any userspace tools that defines the fan policy ? See if you have this toshiba plaform driver (toshiba_acpi.ko) loaded and procfs? 1. lsmod | grep toshiba_acpi 2. ls -la /proc/acpi/toshiba/ Thanks. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I have only booted this kernel once, and it started the fan after the temperature rose to 70C. Or not, I am not really sure if it started on its own or when I typed in apci -t to get a temperature readout. Afterwards the fan kept running and cooled the computer to 50C and below. It now reads 42C and when I typed in acpi -t to get this temperature readout, the fan went to high speed and stayed at high speed. That is how it has worked in 12.1 with most all the kernels, once the fan was already running. I will test it out more in the next day or two and post back. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Yes, I just checked the toshiba_acpi driver, didn't see any default behavior for fan on this machine. As this is a mainline kernel problem you should file a bug here as well: bugzilla.kernel.org Let's take this as "main" bug and let's concentrate on the latest kernel of the day version. Please attach as plain text: - full dmesg output - dmidecode output - acpidump output Please add me (trenn@suse.de) to CC. Joey also has kernel bugzilla account Some additional things you can try: - Try to not load the toshiba_acpi driver, add: blacklist toshiba_acpi to /etc/modprobe.conf.d/99-local.conf - If the thoshiba_acpi driver is loaded a "force fan" mode can be chosen. Syntax is weird, looks like what Joey said: a fitting userspace tool should get used. You might be able to give it a try by: cat /proc/acpi/toshiba/fan check the value and change it by: echo " force_on : 1" >/proc/acpi/toshiba/fan or echo " force_on : 0" >/proc/acpi/toshiba/fan (not sure I got this right. Be careful to take over the whitespaces). I won't have that much time to look at it closer, but with some luck we get the attention of some others with similar problems.
