The ioprio_set syscall was used to help out here - pulling beagle right, right down the priority queue - in a way that is hard to simulate in user-space: http://svn.gnome.org/viewvc/beagle/trunk/beagle/glue/ioprio-glue.c?revision=3292&view=markup Unfortunately - it seems ioprio_set for IDLE turned into a "root only" system-call making it useless for us. A similar Ubuntu bug is here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.22/+bug/138846 AFAIR there was a kernel thread on this, the pointer for which I've lost and can't find.
