[Bug 259784] New: allow multiple mount points on one partition
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=259784 Summary: allow multiple mount points on one partition Product: SUSE Linux 10.1 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: SuSE Linux 10.1 Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: estellnb@lycos.at QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Sometimes it is necessary to allocate a system on different partitions (space, performance and stability requirements). At the moment you need to have one more extra partition for each additional mountpoint (/usr, /opt, /var, /srv, ...). Unfortunately too many partitions are hard to manage and may cause problems when the system grows. Nevertheless this is not a restriction of Linux in general but a restriction imposed by the Suse-Installer as my fstab shows: /dev/hda7 /mnt/prog reiserfs acl,user_xattr 1 2 /mnt/prog/usr /usr none bind 0 0 /mnt/prog/opt /opt none bind 0 0 Why not allow multiple mount points on a single partition? Supporting this would not even require a change in the graphical surface of the installer. Just allow the user to enter /mnt/prog/{usr,opt} or /mnt/prog/usr&opt as the mount point of a newly assigned partition. f.i.: I do not think that migrating the Gnome-Subsystem from /opt to /usr in OpenSuse10.3 will make sense. Instead of this a more flexible way of partitioning as proposed here will be of much greater benefit! The system will stay more clear if graphical surfaces like KDE and Gnome are stored together in the /opt-directory. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

So far there are no plans to implement support for multiple mount points for the same partition nor support for bind mount as in your above example. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
