[Bug 548403] New: Unable to boot from vmlinuz-2.6.31.3-1-pae kernel (on VMware virtual machine)
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=548403 Summary: Unable to boot from vmlinuz-2.6.31.3-1-pae kernel (on VMware virtual machine) Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: RC 1 Platform: i586 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.2 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: novell_david@bailey.id.au QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Created an attachment (id=323236) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=323236) Screenshot of console messages during boot of 2.6.31.3-1-pae kernel User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.0.14) Gecko/2009090900 SUSE/3.0.14-0.1.2 Firefox/3.0.14 On a VMware virtual machine (upgraded from openSUSE 11.1), the resulting installation does not boot. The upgrade set up 2.6.31.3-1-pae as the default kernel. The system seems to hang whilst waiting for /dev/sda2 (the root partition) to appear. The system also could not find /dev/sda1, which is the swap partition. See attached image for screenshot of the console messages leading up to boot failure. Can successfully boot from the *-default and *-desktop kernels NB 1. Prior to the upgrade (ie as openSUSE 11.1), the machine booted successfully from the *-pae kernel (specifically the 2.6.27.29-0.1-pae kernel) NB 2. This failure also happened with 11.2 milestone 8 ( I didn't realise the cause of the issue at that time ) Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.boot from 2.6.31.3-1-pae kernel (on VMware virtual machine) 2. 3. Actual Results: boot process fails ... Waiting for device /dev/sda2 to appear: ..................Could not find /dev/sda2 -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=548403 User novell_david@bailey.id.au added comment http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=548403#c2 --- Comment #2 from David Bailey <novell_david@bailey.id.au> 2009-10-21 18:52:13 MDT --- It would appear that it was actually the original 2.6.27.29-0.1-pae kernel (from my working 11.1 installation) that is no longer bootable, not a 2.6.31.3-1-pae kernel as I originally stated. I appear to have misread the grub entries (and assumed that they were all the new version). The kernel that has the issue would appear to be the same kernel that was previously working. Does the installer do something to the system that would cause this? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

You should be able to get that kernel booting again by just rebuilding the initrd. Am I correct in assuming that the problem doesn't exist on 11.2? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

This bug is actually the same as 551642 that I re-submitted as a installation bug. The bug does still exist in 11.2 final. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
